Italian Discovery 3 (end 2006) TDV6 HSE to the US

I might be moving to the US (Connecticut) in the future so I am starting to think about what to do with my beloved D3

Do you see any problem (emissions etc) in having my D3 registered in US?

Any idea on what might be the cost of taking it there (Ship etc) from the UK

Didn't think you could import a diesel into the US of A because of emissions. Bit daft as they use half the fuel but that's not the way they look at it.

Ouch! Does it mean I cannot take it there?
But they have diesel over there with much worst fuel consumption (and I assume emissions)

Afaik the problem with importing diesels is that LR never got type approval for the diesel, or atleast something in that direction.

Land Rover NA was almost useless. I asked them if it was possible, if they would be able to do mainteinance etc and eventually which changes would have been required and they were answering with useless statement suggesting me to refer to my dealer, to Land Rover in my country etc

I have sent an email also to the NHTSA office to understand exactly which modifications would be required

If I will have to move it would just be a shame. I have done quite a few changes (always within regulations) to the car so now it is "almost" exactly how I need it and it would be a shame to sell it to buy another one and re-start everything from the beginning

Got a response from NHTSA
The car is not in the list of the "approvable" cars so if I need to import the car I will need to use one of the service provider approved by them.

Funnily enough they say that in the absence of a formal application (but I want to know before if it is a reasonable thing to do and for now I am just triyng to understand) they would have no information on the specific modifications that would have to be made to a vehicle to bring it into compliance with all applicable standards. The only party that would be in possession of that information is the vehicle's original manufacturer.

Now I have requested again informations to Land Rover NA.

Will I get any useful feedback? Who knows, so far only a long chain of emails in which they were trying to send me to somebodyelse without providing any useful information

I wouldn't waste anymore time on this. It's not worth the time and cost.

I've done extensive research into importing cars into US. Simply put, if your particular model is not built for North American market, chance of importing one is slim to none at reasonable cost. And unless your car was originally sold in US/Canada, 99.9% chance yours is not built for USA. It's not just the engine. There are minor details that US law requires that European models do not meet. And no, you can't modify it your self. Everything needs to be handled by a registered importer at a cost that's only worth for cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini etc. We are talking $8000 minimum and up to $20K or so per car. And then you have to deal with EPA on emission issue. Unless same engine type was sold in US on other cars, it's nearly impossible to get it cleared.
