Thanks for all your replys, it would all be a lot easier if we could have 2 private cars, but I have a company car that will never fit us all in. 90% of the time its just her and the kids but at the weekend we will want something to go out in together and I can't think of anything that does so many things so well.
it is definitely worth trying all your suggestions before I give in to the inevitable, and I will also get her to read the thread, so she can see that it is a great machine that just needs to be accepted for what it is!

I can see her point - the D3 is a bit of a lumbering tank compared to some cars. I used to use a Series 3 for everyday knocking about - the swmbo wanted shot - not safe with kids in the back etc. So the D3 was wheeled in - she loves it. Uses constantly. Must admit it is useful - does way more than what we need. In the snow last year it was well impressive - I did'nt have to fiddle with any knobs either! just kept in normal mode. Was better than the series 3. I personally prefer driving the old 911 or the old 5 series bm estate we have - especially as it's got a V8. It's all horses for courses etc. Sure she'll like it in the end - especially with sprogs and the protection it offers.Benny

Keep one of the little plastic kiddy steps in the boot that can be taken out and used whenever required

What about getting some lowering rods? This will make it lower to aid entry and exit.

Sounds like you have a proper 'girl racer' for a wife! Thing is, with her charging around like that (even in a high-performance BMW), how long before she hits some idiot who doesn't look before stepping off a kerb, exiting a junction etc?
Maybe the D3 is what's need to slow her down?
As to the height, the previously mentioned ideas of sliding floor and lowering the car prior to exit do work significantly - I have an elderly Aunt who is 5'1" (at best) ... she manages with the car in Access height.
At the end of the day, I guess your wife has already decided that she 'hates that bl@@dy 4x4', and nothing's going to change her mind (except, maybe, a decent snowfall) ...
Good luck, mate. Regards,
Mick

my missus is only 5 Ft but with side steps its no problem
she loves the disco driving position cos for the first time she can see over everyone els
its a doddle to park as were you can see too is were it ends and if you get the lazy key seats set up saves all the faffing around.
sounds to me you need to buy her a corsa and keep the disco all to yourself.
just give her some time to appreciate what its good at and she will come round . its not just another car its so much more than that .she just hasnt realised it yet MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car

She could always send one of the small children into the boot to retrieve anything that is too far away for her to reach.
I often adopt that approach. As you slide down the banister of life
may no splinters point your way
