Just finished painting front bumper and arches.
Having had my Cairns Blue D3 for three months, I was really fed up trying to keep the bumpers and arches looking black instead of dirty grey, so I decided to paint the arches and the front bumper in Cairns Blue, I also fitted front fog lights at the same time. I did all the spraying using aerosol cans, the first couple I got from LR (VEP501740JEU) but I found that the colour was about four or five shades too dark, bought a couple of tins of primer filler, base coat and clear coat from Paints4U, almost a perfect match. Now I need to get rid of the bling grille and paint the rear bumper to finish things off.
Edit
I forgot, I also did the tailgate handle.

Interesting.
Wifey has the Metropolis so arches are already painted. Had been thinking of tackling the front bumper corners - did you have to rub them down much?
IMHO, the front of the D3 should be preserved. It is a magnificent piece of design. Not a good idea to paint the bumper corners because there is a vertical ligne between the front headlights and along the sides of the front grille that continues with the black bumper corners.
I personally think that the D4 does not look as good.
I had a A bar on my Defender and I never considered putting one on the D3. I love the big fat face of the D3!! 8)
The underbody protection is accepted in my world. I have it on mine. The older I get, the better I was.

You don't have to rub the actual plastic down at all, you give them a couple of coats of High Build Primer, this has a lot of solids that fill the dimples. Once coated, you only have to rub down lightly with 800 grit wet or dry until smooth. You then spray with the colour and if required finish by spraying with clear coat, this is then rubbed flat with 1200 grit wet or dry using soapy water and finally buffed up with a rubbing compound like G3. The bumper was prepared and sprayed last Saturday and I finished it off on Sunday afternoon, being a two part paint, you get a really shiny finish using this method, and it hides a multitude of base coat spraying sins. I had only done a few scratches on cars before this, so I am no expert.

Thanks for that, I am quite pleased with the end result considering my experience, or lack of it.

very nice. 50 /50 on the grill. the bling does break it up a bit. Ihave seen a black supercharger grill for a disco 3 on ebay. i think it will make my java black d3 look good but would like other opinions before i blow 235.00

I quite like that style of grille, I have seen a very similar grille on Ebay but at £199, my plan was to paint the side panels and the top bar Cairns Blue and I have a silver with a hint of blue paint for the centre panel.

Cairns blue - ace - no other word for it apart from mega and essence, and possibly fantastic. Saw a colour coded cairns in Devizes last Saturday morning, Very smart too. Good move there with having a go, I am sure that others will follow. Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Dave,
Cheers for that , if I can do it anyone can . There's a guy on Ebay selling new smooth rear bumpers for around 60 squid, looks prime for painting.
