Knocking from Down Under!
My 06 D3 developed a knocking noise last night and it was very noticeable on the way to work today. Here are the symptoms as I see them: -
1. I can only hear it as we start to accelerate at low'ish speed. After say 40mph I can no longer hear it but that could be due to road noise. Driving on normal level not potholed roads.
2. It seems to be coming from underneath/rear. I feel as though I can hear it more out of my right ear than my left.
3. it doesn't appear to affectthe handling or performance in any way
4. I've just been underneath and had a good shake/shove of everything I could see that might move and all seems quite normal..........though I am far from a mechanic! Give me a 90 and I'd be all over it, give me a D3 and I need help!
5. There is a significant amount of dried caked on mud underneath from our last Greenlane outting but we are talking well over a month ago now.
6. It sounds like a vague dull thud type of knock but it isn't a constant knock. It seemes a little irregular.
If I were driving a 90 I'd have said it sounds like a propshaft UJ on its way out if that's any help.
We are supposed to be going away tomorrow and towing trailer so if I need to get to bearmach for parts I need to get there today.
Any thoughts/opinions would be very much apreciated.Cogito ergo sum!

Not sure. read about that elsewhere but general consensus seems to be that will only be a problem on uneven ground.
Seems I have inadvertently fixed it at least temporarily anyway! Another post suggested trying in low box see if noise still there. Well I did that, couldn't hear anything then flicked back into high and the noise is gone!Cogito ergo sum!

and wash the mud off too ! could be hiding the root cause or potentially throwing something out of balance and be the actual cause.

The knocking sound has now been replaced by a constant whine and the smell of burnt diff oil.Cogito ergo sum!
