Don’t s’pose you recorded the noise via video? Hope it’s just something simple.

I know when mine went I could point to where the screeching and grinding was coming from (inside engine, back end and LHS looking from front), could you have pointed to it? Ie front, outside engine or within it somewhere?

No screeching and grinding - just a knock knock knock knock

Did the engine stop on its own when you got to the side or did you shut it down with the key? If latter did it sound like it was shutting down normally or quicker/more sudden than normal?

A spun bearing means that due to lack of lubrication to the crankshaft. Either a con-rod or main bearing fuses to the crankshaft, causing it to spin inside the main bearing cap or big end.

i didn't have any oil lights showing. Is that apparent by a regular knocking or by some other noise?

This is only a guess that this is the cause, you may be lucky and there is another cause
An inspection of the engine will possibly reveal that one of the main bearing shells that the crankshaft rotates inside has managed to rotate and become framed on top of its opposite shell it then gets distorted and damages the face of the crankshaft
Unfortunately this will be a replacement engine which is a big job, and on a vehicle of that age would probably not make economic sense due to the replacement cost. In my case when it happened I sold the car on as I got more than it would return if I added on the cost of a refurb engine
Fingers crossed this is not the caseMust stop buying shiny toys....
