Knocking sound from front & Clonking through steering wh

Hi,

I'm going to book the D3 into the Dealers, but first I want to make sure it isn't "normal" on a D3.

Basically, when I go over a speed bump or something similar, I get a knocking noise from the front (engine compartment). Any ideas what it could be?

I also get, when turning, a clonking feel and noise through the steering wheel. The only way I can described it is it's like the steering rack catches on a nut as it turns. It doesn't seem to be a smooth cycle as such.

Sorry for my poor descriptions Laughing , I will try and described better tomorrow.

Could they be linked?

Thanks,

Liam

Steering could be the mini Universal Joints should be covered under wty

Does it only Clunk (or is it more like a Boing!?) when on full lock and as you straighten up? If so, could be just that you need to grease the steering stop bumps.

The knocking is likely to be:-

Worn Anti Roll Bar bushes covered under warranty (as you are 08 plate)
Worn Ball Joint covered under wty
Worn Wishbone bushes covered under wty
Or Worn Tie rod ends again, covered under wty.

Hi all.
I get the same "clonking" when driving, whether over speed hump or just normal driving over bumps or holes in road. Seems to be more from the front when going over speed humps and more from the back from driving on normal roads. Question Question

Hi Woody,

I have had the same problem.
The knocking when going over a bump etc was the track rod end ball joints.

I also get the clonking when turning. I feel it through the whole car. Not found the source yet but fear it to be diff or t/fer box related.

Thanks everyone.

Booked in a week Tomorrow. See what they have to say. Fingers crossed!

Also, I thought it might be worth mentioning, Stratstone in Nottingham are doing a Free Health Check and Free MOT Promotion. Not too sure if any other Stratstone Garages are doing this, but it might be worth asking... Thumbs Up

We had rattles and knocks through the front when going over bumps.
The dealer replaced the ARB bushes and the lower ball joints and all was cured although i still get a faint knock feel through the steering column sometimes I feel.

Are the uj's easy to change Bodsy? and where are they on the column?

Be interested on what you find as I get exactly the same mainly on gravel and speedbumps. How easy is it to diagnose which it is? I know it's not the arb bushes as replaced these recently

My wife had a similar problem when driving the car about a year ago. She noticed a knocking coming from underneath the car - she said she'd ran over one of those 'sleeping policemen' a bit too fast perhaps. Sure enough, when I looked underneath the car, there was our local constable, covered in tyre-marks and rather badly bruised, clinging onto the exhaust and knocking on the underside of the chassis, shouting "stop! stop".
Don't take me too seriously. I may be joking.

Well the Disco has gone in today. Currently driving a FL2... Wish I had known what the green up arrow with a plus sign on the dash meant before I started driving...thought I'd broken something! Laughing
