Lack of power (sometimes) on start

My D3 is suffering from an irregular lack of power at start sometimes. The car doesn't start instantly when you turn the key and usually turns over a couple of times before firing. 7 times out of 10 it'll pull away normally, but will sometimes lack any real power for a couple of minutes. Once its going its fine, and once its been running there are no problems. I thought it might be glow plugs given the hesitant start up, and I will warm the plugs two or three times before ignition, but that doesn't seem to make much difference. Nor does outside air temperature; it can be warm or cold.

Any ideas/thoughts very welcome.

Egr valve stuck open turbo side would be a reasonable guess.

Thank you, Bodsy & Tripe,

Is that a DIY job or a garage?

BTW, I changed my brake pads a couple of months ago using the Bodsy Brake Bible. Absolutely brilliant; thank you very much!

Awesome. Thanks all. Blanking it is then. I think I'm a '65 plate 6A VIN so don't think i'll need any electronic wizardry.

Cosmic! Looking forward to the weekend already!

After all that advice, I used an EGR cleaning spray when I did my pre-winter service. I enjoyed perfect running all the way through the winter up till last weekend when the problem started again and was accompanied by a good deal of smoke which I hadn't noticed last time.

BAS blanking kit fitted in about 90mins and without any trouble ... however, you need to make sure you refit the air box properly! I didn't and became a tenth member of the red arrows, trailing thick black smoke every time I accelerated. Air box re-fitted snuggly at a convenient service area and happy running; also returning 33mpg over a 100 mile motorway drive.

Thanks for the advice, and well done BAS for idiot-proof instructions. Easy job.
