Just had an interesting(!) issue with trailer - all lights EXCEPT brake lights (usual 21/5w plus a hi-level led) working; hours of testing thinking it was an issue of corrosion in the trailer junction box (there is no fuse for trailer brake lights on the D4, just the other trailer circuits!); eventually took it to an auto electrician.... they tested everything and traced that there was a lower voltage showing on the off-side, and found that although the bulb filament was intact, it had heated up so much that some of the solder from the 2 terminals at bottom of bulb had melted, dripped off & created a short!! Apparently the D4 can-bus sensed this & instantly isolated the complete brake lights circuit on trailer so none of them worked and same happened on another D4 used to test it!, once brake pedal is released it resets but then does the same again when braking next time!
Solution was to remove the dripped off solder & install a new bulb, all now works. Electrician says he has seen this before including on cars where non-led brake lights have been on a lot, create too much heat & then can even melt the light unit!
Thinking of LED bulbs as they run cool? - anything I need to watch for?, or are they a straight fit (ideally the 21/5, and the 5w rear trailer bulbs plus it has 4 x 5w marker lights (cylinder shaped double ended)), and any recommended supplier on the forum? They need to be small enough diameter to fit through the hole in the back of the circular (90mm diameter) light units on the trailer.
Thanks!
