Lockdown flat battery removal procedure |
|
Hi All,
Gone to start the D3 TDV6 MY07 after 2-3 months of zero use and the battery is flat. I have a CTEK smart charger but charging in situ is not an option as the car has to be parked 100yds from the house, so it needs to be removed from the car.
To do it safely, is the procedure as follows:
- Turn off everything
- Open bonnet, allow the car to go to sleep (sat nav, interior light, etc.)
- Remove negative first then positive
- Take it out
- Close bonnet and lock car door via the emergency key door handle
- Put battery on the charger
- Reinstall - positive first, negative after
- Shut bonnet. Start car....
Does that sound right?
TIA

Mostly, but I would make sure the emergency lock can actually be used or that you can move it before you do anything else if you have to lubricate the lock use 3in1 oil not WD40 types.

Just a point, surely locking the car with no battery will only lock the left hand door , not any of the others.

Yep, I’ll have make sure all other doors are locked manually and only use the passenger.
I wouldn’t have to leave the door open though would I? Could just leave it closed wi the bonnet open and just wait for the car to go to sleep?

Or you save yourself a frustration, and just buy a new one. Believe me, a flat battery (= 12v or lower) Is in deep charge, if this is longer than a 24 hours... it is Normally...
Maybe you can revive it for a short period, but it will kick back on a Unconvenient moment...
Seen it so many times... it is just chemistry ..don’t shoot me 8) Best regards

One to consider, might get it replaced when it goes in for service in July if necessary.
Not sure if it’s an AGM battery? As they can withstand deep discharge much better but even so only probably over a shorter period of time..

If you go new battery route then top it up with the Ctek before fitting. You never know how long it's been stored on a shelf.... Visitor from fullfatrr.com

If you disconnect the bonnet microswitch connector and bridge it with a paperclip, you can lock the car with the bonnet open, then wait for it to go to sleep and then remove battery.
If you have to close bonnet fully for security after battery removal, you will still need emergency key to work to gain entry and release bonnet again.
Also, wether you buy a new battery or manage to get old one to hold a charge, don't put it back in the car till you think you might use it..... 2018 1.5Ti Skoda Octavia - dull as f&ck
