Locked Out of Car With Engine Running (-15 Degree's)

Might be worth including in the Problems encountered in Cold Climates section but I experienced the following difficulty 2 weeks ago whilst on skiing holiday in Tignes. (Temperature -15)

The car had been parked outside for a couple of days when I had opportunity to move it undercover. Engine started first time although a few rattles while oil got circulating. I left the car ticking over with heater blower on full whilst I attended to scraping ice off the windows. When I tried to get back in the car all doors had locked (Engine still running) Coincidentally I had the spare key with me so tried using remote but to no avail. I considered leavering off the passenger door lock cap to see what was underneath such that I might be able to use the key but then thought I would try tailgate which by luck opened. After a scramble across the seats I managed to switch off the engine at which point all the doors unlocked and I was able to open the doors easily.

Its not happenned since, but I will remember next skiing holiday not to shut all the doors with the engine running !

P.S. I also suffered the blown windscreen washer fuse whilst on holiday aswell.

Marvellous Stuff !!!!

If you insert your spare key blade into the slot underneath of the cover on the passenger handle the cover pulls off and you can just insert the key into the now visible door lock.

which was something you were about to try -but got lucky with tailgate

Bingo, this has happened to me also. The vehicle was parked over night. I moved it a few feet and got out to check for any oil leaks etc. ( old LR habit.
I had the head lights on & the hazards on radio on heater on etc. Cane back to the car andit was locked.
Had to use the n|S door to gain entry with spare key.!

This is potentially very serious if you don't have the spare key with you and you don't get lucky with the tailgate. What if you were eg stuck in a garage? Definitely one for LR senior tech's. Why on earth should the car lock unless it is moving?

This happened to a Freelander in 2004 when I was doing my first LRE day.
