Locking tool for fan pulley - Urgent assistance required.
After trying to source a tool from various outlets, including Land Rover directly, I'm asking for help here. The alternator on my 08 Disco 3 has died so I spoke with my brother in law about getting it changed over. Being an ex marine and now a truck mechanic, he was confident he could replace it without the locking tool to remove the viscous fan as instructed in the guide on this site. Does anyone near to the Dudley area have the locking tool that locks out the fan pulley that I can borrow/buy? Meathead brother in law and I only have Friday morning to complete the job so I can only collect on Thursday evening.
Side note to admin: If I have posted this in the wrong area, sorry. [/b]

easy to make up a tool to lock the assembly so you can loosen off the viscous coupling - i made mine from a spare piece of metal profile i was going to take to the tip (Piece from an Ikea Bedhead)
Piece i used was originally the width of a double bed and about 3cm wide and about 3mm thick - just took a measure from the crossmember below to the right hand bolt on the pulley facing from the front and cut the bar about 20 cm longer then cut a slot into it the width of the bolt which i then loosened. took the bar stood it on the crossmember slipped the slot over the shaft of the bolt and tightened it down, then just used my coupling spanner to loosen coupling clockwise.
Still have the bar if you want me to send a pictureMust stop buying shiny toys....

I did mine a month ago.
I put the 36mm spanner on the fan nut and whacked the spanner with a rubber mallet clockwise (nut is left hand thread). Left the belt on when i did this.
Did it twice and it came loose enough to take off.

I’ve had mine off twice, both times a sharpe blow with a chisel did the trick. Remember that it’s a left hand thread. There was a picture posted recently of the pulley locked with a socket extension under one of the bolt heads, which I thought I might try next time.Simon.

As Defector states, don't forget it is a LEFT HAND thread. I'm probably trying to teach you to suck eggs, but it is surprising how often one forgets! I made up a tool using two pieces of flat steel (apprx. 20mm wide) made into a Y shape with nut and bolt at ends as locating pins. One long piece and one short piece with the short piece connected to the long piece so that it was movable to locate the holes in the fan. Does that make sense? Hope so.2007 Disco3 2.7 tdv6 SE

When I did my timing belts I used a universal one like in pick from Euro car parts. Used it on one water pump pulley bolt and wedged it against another one as couldn't fit it as pic shows due to viscous nut to big. Worked a treat though.
This just reminded me I have a set from my D2 ownership might see if I can rejig them.Land Rovers don't leak they just mark there spot
