What to look at when buying a D3

Hi guys,

I had a D2 but looking for a D3 diesel. Maybe there is all ready a topic for this but havent found it yet.

Where to look when buying a D3, are there points that need special attention for corrosion, engine troubes( heard of a lot troubles for 2.7 V6) and so on.

Robert

A good d3 is a damned good car.
A bad d3 will rape your wallet and mind!

As said, use the search button...

In general (as also a former D2 owner, now D3 spoken)

The corrosion issues on the chassis, like on the rear of the D2, are “non” existent on de D3 general speaking.... so do the “normal” thourough checks when buying and you will be good...

Engine troubles, it seems a lot, but they produced a lot also...... but it can happen that the bearings spin, cambelts break.... i think there is a sort of consensus here among people who rebuild engines.. that
If the oilpump is changed for the stronger one, and around 100k (km’s) , so good pressure, no change of breaking off the tensioner of the cambelt, engine wise they are not weaker than others engine’s...

Very regular Maintenance, right oil, etc. Etc. Are all very important..... if auto box, check Torque converter, check compressor function (does it also stop after a while?) and pressure drops over night..
buy as luxury as you can find, otherwise you keep buying retrofit stuff, believe me..

Biggest thing is, major engine work, gearbox work, etc. Is body off... (can be done without, double the time and effort imho) so IF needed.... one whole week work in the workshop... € € €

Bottomline: if you have a max budget, less than € 12000 devide that in two and buy one for one half, and you will be safe..... otherwise take your chances and take your losses “if”

For me, buying in the Netherlands, was no option... most of them have too much km’s on them..and pricing is over the top in relation to the mileage/km’s.

In germany, good low mileage D3’s with good service records can still be found...for the same budget than the dutch offerings but with 100k or more....less on the odometer..
Thumbs Up
 Best regards
Harold
