I just drove back from a get together in the middle of Norway.
The steering has been getting harder and harder all the time.
I now have to fight to steer.
It will go to the stealers for a check, but what are common problems on the steering.
If the PAS pump has stopped working, what sort of cost are we looking at to replace it if they won't do it on good will (2 months out of warranty) ?

Hi Glen,
Not had this problem on a car but the most common fault is loss of fliud from somewhere which gives the symptoms you seem to be having.
Unfortunately, if the system has run dry this can wreck the pump.

Seem to recall the PAS oil is green, so if it looks darker than this then possibly a problem.
Don't forget that a failing tensioner pulley on the auxilliary engine drive belt could cause slipping, which will affect alternator, power steering and aircon.
Have you had any squealing from the engine? To overload the systems, turn stereo on, aircon to full cold, full speed blower fan, put on the heated seats and windscreens, headlights to full beam and select off-road height to turn on the compressor and see if you get a squeal or alternator charge light on the dash.
If that lot doesn't cause a loose belt to slip, then it's not loose enough to be your problem, and it's back to looking at the steering components. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

I will try all this, but have just been called out to work a day early, so will have to wait a week.
Thanks

Glen ,
I have recently flushed my PAS system with 2 litres of new fluid as mine was a very dirty colour.
Only place I could get the correct fluid was the stealers . (Cold climate green fluid)
My PAS was intermittently going slightly harder than normal so decided to flush it and so far the fault hasn't reappeared

Tawny,
When you flushed it out, is there a drain or did you have to break a hose ?

Ian ,
I used a handprimer pump to empty the reservoir and then topped it up with fresh fluid.
Repeated this somewhat 8 times in-between running the engine and working the PAS until I put the last of it in and the fluid was staying clean

You would be able to get a Diesel hand primer pump , currently fitted to alot of Peugeot's and Renault's from a scrappy
Length of hose connected to it going into the reservoir and the other end straight into a container.
Doesn't take long at all.

I have Diesel hand primer/pump that probably do but never thought getting one out a scrappy.
It been a few year since I have been in one as they started charging stealer prices.

I experienced similar problems, but lost the fluid. Stealers said the pump had a leak and had to be replaced. New pump was 145£ at Britcar (4000nkr at the stealer). I had to replace the lower balljoints aswell, and for total labour the quote was 9200nkr. (approx 1000£) So Im trying to do this myself this week.. Club Traxide and dual Optima- red and yellow
Club broken EPB
Club 4 broken mudflaps
Club BAS EGR blanks
