Low range transmission whine |
|
A new problem - when I select low range, I get a loud whining noise. To be clearer - the shift from high to low is fine, but once low is engaged, there's a lot of noise from something that sounds like it is spinning very fast. Used to be that the level of transfer case noise when driving was the same, irrespective of high or low range. Now, in high range is pretty much normal (I can't hear any difference) but when low range is selected, it's HEAPS noiser - almost unusable.
It's road speed related, not rpm, and occurs irrespective of transmission gear (ie, its unchanged between neutral or drive). It does not vary from trottle on or trailing throttle - the whine is strictly linked to road speed, with higher speed meaning higher noise.
I have searched heaps of posts, but this seems different. I have seen the post about output shaft bearings, but I can't understand why it would only occur in low-range. Any advice/thoughts? Obviously needs to go to the dealer, and I suspect I will be very grateful that I purchased an extended warranty, but I would like to hear from you guys what you think it is.
PS - my cars been used a bit (110k km), including some in low range, but we're talking day trips, so its not like it's done heaps of low range mileage.
Thanks,
