Low voltage at start, despite new battery |
|
Hi,
Have been getting fault messages at cold start and decided it was time for a new battery. Got a new 850CCA 100Ah Calcuim battery but that dit not really help. Still starter is turning slower than I would like to and still get the "HDC fault" and "Transmission fault, limited traction" messages appearing during start-up.
Assuming this is not normal even if temperatures here seems to have got stuck around -10?
Any ideas on what could cause this? Battery connectors seems clean and appear to make good contact.
Thanks!

Hi,
Without all the information, have you tried / checked the following.
1) was the new battery charged ?
2) have you tried to charge the battery from the mains ?
My starts and runs fine i -16 / -26
Have you had the vehicle in to clear the faults ? if so did they return again ?

1. Didn't check really. In my previous experience, normally a new battery is ready to go when fitted
2. Not the new one, but has been driving for at least 5-6 hours since fitted so should be ok?
Anyway, I'll start with the easy things and will treat the new battery with the CTEK over the weekend and see if things improve. If not I'll measure voltage during cranking etc to see what is going on.
Thansk.

if the starter motor is turning slowly with a new battery then it's probably that which is the problem, it was on mine which is a similar vintage to yours... and theeeeennn......???

1784,
Just had mine service and asked the guys to check why I was getting the same HDC fault warning but the HDC was still working okay. Answer was that the computer was seeing a low battery voltage on start up, so the guys at Duckworths kindly charged the battery and tried again only to get the same fault. They checked the battery and could not find anything wrong with it?? I'm having the wheel bearing done on Monday so will ask again see if we can get an answer to the problem. There can't be too much wrong with the battery as I leave the car parked up for 2 weeks when I'm offshore and it has no problems starting when I get back. Regards, Trev.

Check the -ve cable where it connects to the car body, not just the battery terminal. Could be a contact problem limiting current draw at startup. Have you measured battery voltage when engine turning over ? There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Hi 1784,
Had the same trouble with mine it turned out that I was not driving far enough to recharge the battery.
How far are you travelling before turning the car off?
I had a optima yellow top fitted in the second battery box wired straight to the main battery this has solved the problem. "The fate of the wounded lies in the hands of the one who applys the first dressing"
