I know that nothing is perfect but a 26km detour just to get 10metres is taking the 
Up to now I have only used Tom Tom and never had any problems. Today was the first test of the LR system on the new D3 and I was less than impressed. On a straight run from Reims to Calais I was diverted off the Auto-Route through the toll booth, then followed a small country tour of some 26kms and the yes back to excatly the same toll booth (another €1.90 !) going through the opposite way ! The nett gain was 10 metres !!!
Boy was I off !
Is this normal ?
Otherwise the system performed OK, although a little to keen to take you down every small road to save 1metre.
PS: 28.8mpg !! My personal record Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

LR Sat Nav ...yup, that's normal.
From my home, it takes me a detour around a housing development just to come out 200yds down the road!!!
As I've said before ... LR SatNav - "it's ok if you know where you're going"
 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

There goes my justification to the wife for buying the newest D3, 
I'll have to come up with some excuses for it, like,
Don't worry dear, it may be a slightly longer route, but it's the most economic  Mrs Jones ? We've come for your Liver

Remember people, NO satnav is infallible. I've used TomTom, Garmin and some other brand (Navigon I think) and have learnt to only use it as a guide. If going on a long trip, I have always checked my route the old fashioned way beforehand. Then, if the Nav wants me to take an unexpected route, I Ignore It!

I totally agree with Simonmd, I always make the SatNav show me three routes and then I select the one that looks as if its going the way I want too. Although to be honest the system I had built into my BMW was awsome (VDO) and I find the LR system not bad at all, it has had its funnies, took me onto a slip road, down it, back up and rejoined the motorway. No idea why but the wife found it funny All in all every SatNav system is a guide, as Simon said,  and should be used as such. Stadt Panzer Power

I was using a Garmin streetpilot in the states last month, and was travelling along a 6 lane highway, when it got me to turn right, then left after 100 yards, along through a residential area for a mile, parallel to the road it got me to turn off, then left, and then right back onto the road it got me to turn off! I was amused by this, but wouldn't be if it had taken me miles off course!  IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

I have to say the SATNAV in the D3 is no where near as good or accurate as the one I had in my Mondeo ST220 or Merc E class.
It seem to take the "long" way round just for the hell of it. Is it sponsored by the Oil companies ????? Duncan

So, what happened before Sat Nav ..
I sometimes think that the "kids of today" will be totally stuffed if and when their sat nav packs up when they are 10 miles from home.
As said above, its a guide to give you a clue when you will get there, and some of the better ones factor in traffic changes en route.
I use Tom Tom on a PDA, and sometimes that just says "no" so its back to the maps and general "savy"
That said, when time allows, I set it to Shortest Journey, so it goes through the places yet to discover 'Electric Power' ... ..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

I use my sat nav nearly everyday and have done so for 2 and half years. In that time it has maybe made 3 daft routes. I reckon it is great. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I agree that it isn't bad but it does seem to be overly keen on the M25 & M4!! Formerly a Buckingham Blue V8 HSE, Side Steps, Privacy Glass, Lamp Guards, A-Frame Protection Bar with Driving Lamps and DVD

Especially when travelling from Bristol to Birmingham  Mine tried to take me on to the M4/M5 at Almondsbury, west along the M4, over the severn bridge, off at the next junction, back onto the M4 east, over the bridge again to where I started then North up the M5 Duncan

I've found it best to drive as far as you know, then look at the sat nav. As mentioned it does like the M25, so if I'm driving to Gloucestershire I'll drive M27 M3 A34, then look for where it wants me to go DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

check your setting on the Satnav there is some preferences you can set eg. avoid toll roads etc. Think it's under route options.

What I find most annoying is that the LR Sat Nav never seems to recognise by-passes and will always take you through a town centre when theres usually a perfectly good dual-carriage way around a town. Even if you mess around with the route preferences it still does it !
Its OK as a guide but its not a serious Nav tool.

It certainly has an attraction for the centre of Dorchester, rather than using the A35/A37 or nipping up through Charminster I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
