LR4 Disco 6x6 Build

I am embarking on a disco 6x6 build over the next 12 month's or so.

Would anyone happen to have a cad drawing or 3d solidworks file of the Discovery 3 or 4 chassis by any chance. I am willing to pay for the information if required as I need this to get the project started and I haven't really got the time to measure up and draw it on solidworks.

I am hoping to do all the planning over the Christmas period to then start the build in January using 2 x donor Discovery 4's to be able to extend the chassis.

Looking at something similar to this with the intention of using it for overland trips.

Interesting. Thumbs Up

I'm not sure you'll have any luck getting a CAD file for the chassis. I sometimes do mods to HGV chassis/steering systems, and I get the chassis LASER scanned before I start any design work.

You could get a chassis scanned for about £1k.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Yes I have looked into having some of our boats scanned for design work in solidworks but the price puts me off somewhat but maybe I should have a look into again.

Who do you use for scanning?

I intend on posting my progress on here as I go.

ambitious project ... are you really sure you don't have the time to measure it all accurately before starting on the mods ? isn't the old joiners saying "measure twice cut once" ?

that said, you're presumably going to have to buy some special components ... through diff and short propshaft are my initial thoughts .... that you'll have to line up and then fabricate the bits to hold them in place/hang them off. much of that work will be done on-the-fly, so you can measure just the bits you need and get the parts fabricated.

assume that buying a front-damage d3/4 write-off is a consideration ?

Yes a bit ambitious, luckily we have all the resources at work to do all fabrication and design

it's just the time it takes to measure up and then get the data in to solidworks to then do my final design, It would make life a lot easier if someone else had already done it.

Looking at a second transfer box mounted behind the original, then the difficulty is getting the third propshaft over the second diff which will be some on the fly designs and trial and error.

Yes going for 2 x write offs or may use one of the commercial vehicles I already have.

I thought the one you are basing your project on was built by Supacat? I can remember it being sold but witham’s a few years back. I think it was a topic here somewhere?

Yes that's correct, it was built by Supacat for the Navy and had a 5th wheel trailer as well. It was sold a few years ago and then came back up for sale at the beginning of the year for 60k I seem to remember. Unfortunately didn't have that sort of money at the time.
