LRDISCO3 not starting in minus temperatures

Hello all, my Disco 3 will start and run perfectly every time apart from when the outside temperature gauge reads-1 or lower. The battery is new, glow plugs have been checked and the alternator is new and has been checked. Has anyone experienced the same? Any advice? Could it be that the temperature sensor simply tells the engine not to turn over in negative temperatures. Any help is welcomed. One thing to note, I can start the car with a Sealey Roadstarter battery pack in negative temperatures but that then plays havoc with the satnav and radio and parking brake light once the car has started.

Confused Question Could it be that the temperature sensor simply tells the engine not to turn over in negative temperatures.

Are you saying the car 'won't' turn over in lower temps or just fails to start?
If it turns over on the starter and won't fire up then glow plugs is still a fair bet, cheapest option is a remote FBH starter Thumbs Up

Many thanks for the response and apologies if I get this wrong... the car will turn over (as in makes a noise and tries to start) but it will not start after keeping the key in ‘second stage’ for 3,4 seconds..
The glow plugs have been checked previously evening having 1 replaced and they were checked again recently along with the bat and alternator... I let the glow plug light go out, and I wait 2 minutes and repeat before starting the car at 0 degrees and the car starts fine... but 1 degree lower and I face the same problem...

Biffysun, remote FBH

Hello biffysun.

What would a remote FBH do? How could I fit(?) this?

Kind regards

Sounds like glow plugs failed. I’ve fitted loads of the Altox controller to fire up the FBH to pre warm the engine and stop you having to struggle starting when cold.

I can fit for you or just supply if you want to fit yourself. Thumbs Up

Fire up the Fbh from your phone via app or text or website. Thumbs Up

How would I go about letting you fit this remote? What is the cost involved? Is there a way to test the glow plugs? So this wouldn’t have anything to do with the air temperature sensor under the bonnet? Just seems strange it is literally as soon as the car drops from 0 degrees to -1 it stops working m..

2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 Base 5 Seat Manual Unknown ColourDiscovery 3

Hi Djbetram,

I have had the same thing happen, this beast from the east has caused my D3 to do the same.
After one new battery and a mobile mech coming out with no luck. I resorted to covering engine bay with a tarp and got a fan heater set under the car. After 2 hours of heating she started and ran fine.
I Know this isn't a perm fix, but 4 days without it going above 0 was a massive pain.
Had to use my wife's Qashqai!!!!

Will be getting glow plugs looked at when the weather warms, don't want to risk any snapping plugs.

Hope it helps as a last ditch fix.

Again get a Remote for the FBH Fuel Burning (Pre) Heater fitted ASAP its the very best extra you can have, especially if glowplugs are faulty. Thumbs Up

I've had the same issue on my d3. Having a car like this that doesn't like the cold...... Laughing
Read on another feed about pouring hot water on coolant sensor. Hey Presto, fired up first time.
Apparently, (I'm no expert) in minus temperatures the start up procedure in the engine from the ecu is dirrerent and that what caused my issue.
Once the coolant sensor is warmed up, it tricks the engine and starts first turn of the key.
Ive been trying to find a long term fix for this issue but have failed so far. Any ideas will be welcomed !!

Where is the coolant sensor located this might get some non FBH remote owners out of trouble?

Many thanks all...I’ll try the tarp and heater option, the hot water option and will let you know. Last resort I’ll just get the FBH fan that bodys has sent me.

I did however have success twice at -2 and -3 when I turned all electric off. But the Beast from the East has rendered it silent since hen.
