Ronp, I hope you're wrong as I have booked Eastnor rather that Skipton as I was told it was better!
I did half a dozen weekends of Camel Trophy training at Eastnor in 1992. There is a complete range of terrain there and lots of different trails, quite of few of which you can only get through with a winch (or maybe a tow from the far side). There is also the reasonably infamous "Gearbox Hill" - very steep with a tight turn at the top to come back down again - and some good water splashes etc.
We did one water splash with quite a steep entry and at that time a steep, muddy exit, with two Disco 1s linked together to make an eight-wheel-drive monster. The intention was to get as far up the other side as possible and then do some winching practice. But as one vehicle lost traction, the other gripped and visa-versa all the way to the top. A few surprised on-lookers, including some of the Land Rover staff and Camel 'vets'. I can't remember exactly where it was, but would love to see how a D3 copes with the slope.
I've done a couple of LRE half days at Eastnor since and although they were good fun, they really aren't designed to test the vehicles to the limit! I suspect it's got a lot to do with keeping repair bills down!D4 XS MY12 Galway

AC, does this look familiar?
it's known as the 'bomb hole', we tried to get a D3 for the LR winching course but Eastnor said they couldn't do it - and wouldn't let us use our own
They did use it for the G4 training though with both D3's and RRS's
The Defender was thouroughly stuck, even a double line pull failed to release it from the mud, compounded by a winch failure. We eventually got it out though with much re-rigging of lines and repositioning the second vehicle - guess it didn't help leaving Ken in the one in the photo with an entire days Ginsters production run...

TFC - That could well be the one, although I remember it as being steeper than that!! But that's probably just my memory ("steep, muddy slopes successfully driven" tend to go in the same brain compartment as "fish which got away"!) . I'd have to see the entry too though to remember for certain.D4 XS MY12 Galway

The picture doesn't do it justice really, the entrance was down a narrow rutted track with a drop-off to the left, there was a turn just before the bottom and a water course runs across it
Non Stick Nick has some better photo's here http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=460

99% sure that's it!
Hadn't thought about it for ages until I read this thread!
Nice to see you had trouble even before you got to the bottom!!
Just goes to show how capable the Disco 1 is/was, especially in 8WD mode!D4 XS MY12 Galway

yer
although as it was a winching course, the instructions were to 'not try too hard to drive it'
I can just imagine a pair of V8's clawing their way out 8) 8) bet the sound was as good as it gets!
