Maintaining a D4 from High Mileage to nothing |
|
Hi all
My job has changed so my poor D4 is now getting a break as i have a company car as well.
My D4 has done just shy of 30K in the 14 months is been built, and now doesn't move much during the week.
Is there any recommendations on how to keep her in tip top shape? All services will be completed on time etc but i wondered if there is anything else?
Many thanks
Jack

not so much D4 related, but this has happened to me on numerous occasions, sometimes just by having too many cars.....
If you can leave it in a garage, or at least under cover, then do. If not, then try to rent a garage....
Otherwise, brakes, disks etc. corrode and have to be replaced. I've had cooling pipes corrode, etc etc - ymmv, but sitting static in the damp British climate is not at all ideal.
At the very least, try not to leave the handbrake on, and have it on trickle charge.

I would have thought taking it out at least twice a week to at least reach optimum temperature would be enough ..... I'm no expert ..... I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along shortly to give qualified advice... 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I'd agree that use is the key and I'd agree with a couple of times a week or so and long enough to get the engine up to temperature and get some warm air wafting about the cabin. That'll help prevent mold forming on areas like seatbelts and so on and stop the brake discs getting a coating of rust and keep the calipers from sticking.
Laying up long term is a bit complicated. I'm not sure exactly what it would entail for a D4, but such things as filling up the engine with oil, draining the cooling system and rotating the wheels (to prevent flat spots) may be involved.
But you say you don't use it in the week, which implies it gets used at the weekends, which may be good enough, so long as it gets a fair spin.

Thanks guys, It gets used very occasionally during the week in evenings and then Friday night to Monday morning my CCar is parked up and the disco is in full use.
Also tows my caravan every other weekend so still gets a good run.
Unfortunately it wont fit in the garage as there is too many other toys in there
I think ill be ok, ill keep an eye on the battery and remember that use is the key!
Thanks all
