Mandatory MOT testing is to be reintroduced from 1 August 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifted, Roads minister Baroness Vere has announced today (29 June 2020).
Drivers are encouraged to book a test in advance.
Vehicles with an MOT due date before 1 August will still receive a 6-month extension.

If someone is self-isolating or unwell and therefore not able to get a vehicle for its MOT, or perhaps if they're living somewhere where there aren't any MOT centres open due to the current health situation, then I can understand why an extension towards the end of the year might be necessary.
But for anyone else - if they're fit and well, able to get out and about, and have access to an MOT testing centre, why would they choose to postpone a test which is intended to check the roadworthiness of a vehicle and might well flag up the early stages of a developing issue before it turns into something potentially very expensive and dangerous?
I think the point of the 6-month extension was for the benefit of those who were genuinely unable to get their MOT done - either due to personal circumstances or because of a lack of testing stations. My D3 was due its MOT last month - I wasn't able to get it done absolutely on time, but as soon as I could (a couple of weeks ago) it went in for the test (and sailed through, to my relief!).

The MOT is a basic safety check so why are some people so worried about the MOTs?
We had the MOT on the D4 done at the same time as the annual service. Yes we could have extended it but it will be easier to keep annual service and MOT in the same month.
Personally I would rather have an independent person telling me our vehicles are relatively safe and roadworthy. Any problems will be fixed on our vehicles.

Just got mine done on Friday a month early. All good!
I have had my Disco mot,d at its usual time in July as i would rather know if it has a problem. It could save money in the long run or stop a bong going off. Please not the dreaded bongs NOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooThe happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Because for many people the MOT is the only time their car visits a vehicle maintenance facility of any sort. The first excuse when defects are pointed out at the roadside is "I was going to get it done at the MOT". A lot of people are quite happy to drive around and not look at their car's condition for an entire year.Tony

First MOT was due end of June. Had service and MOT at end of June. Found something that can be fixed under warranty, so no brainer really getting things checked asap.

The wife's MOT was due last month and she will now be booking it in for January because of the extension.
Personally, I hate winter MOTs because if there are any repairs to be made, muggins ends up on the driveway in freezing cold, wet and miserable weather.Kev

I've had all my vehicles MOT'd at normal time, because I also dislike winter MOT's. Nothing worse than rolling round on the floor in the wet and cold.Richard

Good point ref winter mots
However if I renew the mot in Nov it will then synch with my ins and road tax
Fingers crossed , I’ll try and lift the wheels off to change my brake hoses , plus empty the parts cardboard box that we all seem to have in the corner of the shed
Just finished spraying the door handles , don’t think they came out too bad

Had my 13 year old Jazz MOTed yesterday, passed with no advisories. All it needed me doing was charge up the battery, I left the lights on after checking all the bulbs.
Only hope it goes as smoothly with SWMBO’s car. It’ll need a new windscreen which is scheduled to be fitted 2 weeks before the MOT is booked. Not sure that’s enough wiggle room for the usual windscreen fitters.
