Ok,
this might be a stupid one,
has it been done already:
the safari snorkel fitted on the D3, with a mushroom on top instead of the ugly air ram.
Trying to combine the looks with the functionality 
Although I don't have any idea how a mushroom would look like on a D3 (my 3D-model isn't finished yet  )
or
one could try to fit a flexible tube in the Mantec G4 raised air intake which fits the intake of the filter  D4
