Auto!
I was always a manual fanatic -thought auto was for lazy middle age g...s
However now on my second auto and wouldn't want to go back. Had to drive a manual car last week and hated it. Auto much easier when towing as well!
Maybe I am a fat and lazy middle aged g..?

Auto is like air con, once you have had it you never go back.
Also think of the resale.

The manual is a lovely gearbox, but during my holiday in Switzerland, Austria and Italy this summer i really wished i had an auto on the mountain roads....
the road out of Klosters (Spelling! sorry if wrong) was a nightmare with a few dodgy down changes on some nasty hairpins... an Auto would have been soo much easier... my leg was killing me at the end!
My advice Auto......

Ok, I'll put forward the case for manual:
10-15% more miles out of every gallon.

Auto for me too. The D3 really suits the auto box. A friend has a manual and it doesn't feel as good to drive. Matt

My mind was made up back in the mid 90'es
I was shopping for a used Range Rover, and actually had the choice between 91 classics - 1 auto and 1 manual.
I test drove both and came to the conclusion that this was going to be my first auto, and i have had my last manual.
Within a short time i learned to control the gearbox with the throttle. You can actually control the auto gearbox pretty well with throttle amount and the speed you press/depress it.
I the D3 (had it 1½ months now) I am learning to control that too and it goes pretty well.
If you want manual for the extra few mpg, theres no discussion. Else there is no doubt in my mind - auto will always win. And in the seldom everyday situation where you would actually need to control gearshift you can use the triptronic.
Cheers
Jakob

On the bendy roads I take to work, I find the passengers are far less likely to vomit if I do use the command shift, it seems to improve my driving style. But for every other road, it's fully automatic.
I'd like to try a manual though.
