Ok let's try this way... I have a manual but I am being pointed in the direction of a new automatic by my dealer....any stong views or opinions out there

Nick,
I recall some of the tips given at an off road course ( 3k revs in second gear and side step the clutch when stuck in mud) would not work with an auto. Have you done teh LR course in an auto

Thanks Martin, I have not quite learnt my way round the entire site yet, which is fantastic I must say ! The vote here could be held with SWMBO who due to a horse riding accident has a bit of knackered left arm ( medically ok to drive) and gets feed up with multiple changes around the local lanes.
Aside from that no.1 sprog is at Coventry on the Automotive Engineering and Design course and one of his tutors is a LR guy who has posed them the question ..how do we design a vehicle to meet the 2010 pedestrian deflection rules, ie no flat front ends....sort of gets the whole 4x4 market in one hit.

Did my level 1 in a auto in VERY muddy conditions, did not get stuck my self but one of the other chaps did! But only when belled out! Range Rover Sport Estate 2.0 P400e Hse Dynamic Black

I wouldn't change from my auto, but it is purely personal preference. There are things that autos can do that manuals can't and possibly more that a manual can do that an auto can't. For me you can't beat the smoothness and the point and shoot fun of an auto and in D3 it is very very good! DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Taking fuel out of the equation - Auto everytime if you want a nice easy ride and little if any off road. Manual if you want to off road.

I always had manuals before the D3 and I must say that after Rockingham I was left thinking "where would I ever take the disco that would not be OK in an Auto"
As I said in that thread it went places where my Defender would have struggled.
The electronics may be the cause of most peoples problems, but when they work they are amazing!

The manual 'box is great and as others have said gives better MPG.
If I had to choose again I would probably go auto as I shlep into London from Shropshire a lot and the auto round town would be great.
But then I get pretty good MPG and range from each tank (560 miles plus on average with BP Ultimate, ESSO Energy etc) so this kind of makes up for it.

Manual is nice but tiresome around town but on the motorway I prefer the manual....it's a personal choice Money talks.Sex sells.Mud sticks.Time flys.  happens.People talk.Impressions last!

Have a manual @ present (now 9 months old & 9k) fine to drive and slick gearbox, only gripe is hill starts with a load on.
Hopefully swapping for an auto v.soon.

If I changed my D3 for another at some point, I will retain the manual G/box as now. Fuel consumption is less, and the engine is so torquey and flexible that manual gearchanging is not an issue to me.
Hmmmm. How much extra does the Autobox cost, anyway, without me looking it up! Is it really worth it?
