Manual Gearbox Oil Change
I have changed the engine oil, transfer box oil, front and rear diff oil, brake fluid and coolant on my MY2006 D3 Manual, there was only the gearbox oil left to change (well, wont be changing the power steering fluid hopefully!), so with three weeks off work starting today I decided to have a go at this.
I had started planning the job a few months ago by trying to loosen off the filler and drain plugs but they were stuck tight and none of my Torx fittings seemed a snug fit. After very many hours searching this site and Googling I could not find any reference to the correct tool, so I bought a new filler/drain plug (LR Part number TYB500010) to be able to try various tools without lying on my back under the car. To cut a long story short it is the 8mm hex bit that undoes the diff filler plugs! It needed "tapping" into the hole in the old plugs a bit with a "small" hammer as I had rounded the hex off slightly with my Torx bits!.
I then ordered the Fuchs Titan Sintofluid as recommended by the Oilman on this site and Fuchs website. Despite only paying for Saver Delivery, it arrived next day. Top Service
Then I lifted the front of the car a bit to make room to work underneath. (Elf 'n Safety- Two jacks, two axle stands).

I removed the plastic gearbox cover which is held in place with 6 x 10mm bolts.

Whilst I had that off, I opened the water drain on the diesel filter which was new 6000miles ago, but all came out except a tiny dribble of diesel as I tightened it up again.

I then removed the filler plug first, so as not to be caught with the drain plug out and unable to undo the filler plug!

Then I undid the drain plug.....

And out comes the old oil, note how black it is after 5.5 years and 57000 miles

The dirty oil in the bowl, smells gorgeous though (if you like that sort of thing!)

Then used my Clarkes Suction pump to refill with 1.6 litres of lovely clean new oil

I hope this helps anyone else thinking of doing the job, it took me about an hour and cost about 30 quid....

Excellent write up !
I have a manual and will do this myself in the not too distant future,
Has there been any significant improvement in shifting since the addition of fresh clean oil !
Mines quite notchy from 1st into 2nd ?

I wasn't having any problems with gear selection anyway other than the awkward dog leg into reverse, I have only moved the car round on the drive since, so not really expecting anything to change in that respect, but being a bit OCD I like fresh oil in everything......

I changed it on my dad's car in sunny SA recently, but had to buy the oil from stealer = £50/l so thanks for the suggestion to buy from Opioil could not find it on there website last time I looked. Nice 19 tyre in back ground let me know if you whant to sell it A few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

I got the Castrol SAF XO Diff oil from Opie Oils with Forum discount
The transfer box is very simple, a Torx filler and drain plug, I cant remember if it was T45 or T50 fitting, plus you will need to buy the oil from a Main Dealer as I dont think anyone else sells it....

Does any one think it may be advantageous to get Oilman to put a pack together containing all lubricants to conduct the changes in Oil in both diffs, transfer box, gear box (Man or Auto) ?
That way we could pay one lot if carriage and maybe get a good price on it too ?

I have a MY2005 with 67k on the clock; I have noticed lately the gearbox is getting very notchy form 1st to 2nd. I was thinking whether a oil change would help but after seeing this right up and the colour of that oil I am defiantly changing it JE Remap, De-cat, Blanked EGR's, Allisport intercooler, Samco intercooler hoses, D4 rear lights, A bar, Big spot lights, Front headlight guards, 20'' Stormer wheels,

Nevertheless, hopefully the following information will be of some use to those folks who may be planning oil change services on their D3 manual gearboxes as they approach that magical 150,000 mile/10 year service interval that LR recommend.
I've been looking into the recommended oil specifications for the ZF S6-53 6 speed manual transmission and deduced the following from the ZF Web site:
Starting here, there is a list of recommended oil specifications on the ZF Web site.
Next to the table entry for the S6-53 gearbox, ZF state:

Warning: use of incorrect lubricant can cause transmission failure
The Land Rover part number for the Burmah/Castrol MTF BOT 338 for the ZF S6-53 6 speed manual box is TYK500030. The retail price is, well, expensive. I can't find a definite price but you should expect to pay more than £30 per litre if you buy this stuff from a LR dealer.
Note also that ZF recommend Castrol Syntrans B 75W for this gearbox, along with all the other proprietary car manufacturer branded oils.
Details on Castrol Syntrans B 75W (which is a 75W-90 manual transmission oil) here:
So, I reckon that Castrol Syntrans B 75W will be fine.*
