Manual gearbox rattle on idle
I have a 2005 D3 2.7tdv6 with manual gearbox. (278k km)
It generates strange rattle noise when engine running on idle or rpm goes down(pumping the gas pedal) in neutral and a gearbox warm. Rattle disappears if clutch pedal press down.
I'm sure that noise relates to gearbox and not to the engine.
Except the rattle gearbox still working "fine"
Anybody has experimence what can be the problem ?

Maybe DMF but I also hear bearing noise, and it is related to rattle.
If I press down the clutch pedal, both noises gone.
)I can't find any info about the manual gearbox problems.)

The clutch release bearing is probably well worn too, but gearbox removal is not a small job so you would be well advised to replace the entire clutch if you decide to repair. Flywheel, disc, pressure plate, and release bearing, not cheap.
You do not want to be revisiting this job anytime soon!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I don't think that clutch release bearing is gone, because normally wrong one generates bearing noise when pedal press down.
In my car, the problem opposite.
If I press down the clutch pedal, gearbox shaft disconnect from the drive. (no rattle and no bearing noise)
If engine running on idle, gearbox shaft has driven over the clutch (gear in neutral- rattle and noise)
If will remove the gearbox, I'll replace the clutch and DMF, but currently, I'm not sure that need a full clutch kit+ DMF, or clutch kit+ gearbox too.
Yesterday replaced the gearbox oil. It was black, but not found metal debris in it.

My Defender has a rattle when idle and disappears when clutch is pressed. It is the clutch release bearing and will sort out when the clutch gives up. Usually the rattle gets worse over time.

I ran a manual D3 for 230,000+ miles. I always replaced the DMF, clutch and bearing each time. It’s just not worth the hassle and cost not doing it.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
