Manual gearbox - sloppy lever and not selecting reverse gear
Advice required please.
We have a 2005 (55 plate) Discovery 3 with the 6 speed manual gearbox.
When we bought it last November with 113k on the clock the gear lever seemed a bit sloppy, bit like an old truck!
Now coming up to nearly 115k and it will no longer select REVERSE gear
It feels like the lever and/or linkages are worn and need some attention.
You can actually feel the reverse gate but the lever slips just the wrong way and.......into first gear.
Has any one else had this problem please?
What is required to fix this problem
Managed to fix most things on my old Discovery 1 so now willing to have a go on our 'new' Discovery 3 Cheers, Dave in Essex

Still need advice please.....
Update is that I have pulled it all apart and found that the rubber bushes are worn out and sloppy.
To get to the linkages you have to dismantle and remove all the centre console. Not a job for the faint hearted!
There are 2 miniature sealastick type rubber bushes (similar to suspension bushes) on the gear-change linkage. One at the bottom of the gear-lever and one at the end of the horizontal linkage. This horizontal linkage goes forward to the gearbox via a small Universal joint. The rubber bush is in the UJ.
The UJ is held onto the gear selector shaft by a roll pin. This is proving to be a real pain in the a**e to remove.
I don't really want to remove the gearbox. I am saving this pleasure for when the clutch wears out....
NB Any tips or advice on removing a stubborn roll pin with no access from beneath it would be great
While this is going on (struggle with the roll pin) I have ordered from my local supplier (Britcar UK Ltd) a complete gear linkage assembly, a roll pin and a shiny new gear knob.
As this repair is progressing I have taken loads of photographs and may well post them later.
No doubt other owners will come up against this prblem as they clock up the miles [/img]
So far over the past 2 days there have been 60 odd views of my posting
So where are you experts?
Can I have some advice, tea and sympathy and even some moral support please?
Now off to the workshop for another go at that roll pin.....Cheers, Dave in Essex

No expert, lack of response may have to do with exclusive club of manual D3's (dare I say real off road version of D3)... You have looked at info on here (does cost a bit but worth it I always thought) http://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/vehicle/indexA few mods... and keeping it all running...Faultmate MSV2

Thanks for all the advice, suggestions and support so far.....
The roll pin is now out
I made up an extractor using a long skinny bolt, a ground down nut and spacers.
The new linkage assembly, roll pin and and gear knob have been collected from the parts dealer.
Only to find that it was NOT a complete assembly including the UJ - doh!
That is now on order and due in on Monday
While at the parts dealer, a pessimistic 'expert' was saying that the fault was probably inside the gearbox.
Was quoted about £1700 for a replacement gearbox if I need one!!!
D4JWW - how much is the subscription to this service? Would this also have Service Bulletins of know problems and their fixes?
Disco Duck - luckily I have nice barn to work inside with an inspection pit 8) Interesting that yours is hard to get in reverse. Hope it doesn't go the same way as mine
snailcove - hope yours remains tight mate Nope the roll pin is straight although it is swaged at one end to help get it started.
Now all I need to do is to wait for the new parts.....
Meanwhile any further thoughts and advice would be gratefully received and faithfully applied. [/img]Cheers, Dave in Essex

Likewise, I am looking to rectify a sloppy gear stick too. From studying pictures and diagrams from sources all over the web I am putting my money on the nylon pivot bush half way down being worn allowing lateral movement before the selector rod at the bottom. Only thing is I can find the part number for this piece to replace it...
There's lots of nylon gear stick bushes and repair kits on eBay but I'm not sure if it crosses over to any other application.

Try searching 'detent spring' or 'detent clip' (as below)
