I was talking to a mate of mine who works in the IT dept. of a well known Land Rover Magazine based in Peterborough. He was saying that they have just been given a D3 test vehicle from Polar Foil (or something like that) and they have manufactured a manual handbrake for the D3.
Apparently you have to remove the drum brake system that is currently used and the new system uses a disc brake system. He doesn't know much more than that but expect it to feature in an article in the next couple of months. it costs about £150 apparently but needs to be installed by the company. As far as he knows so far it's been very good and they've been testing it pretty hard - no squealing!
I've asked him to see if he can find out any more and get me some contact details. I feel a group buy coming on!
Anyone heard anything about this? D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Why would you need an old fashioned manual hand brake on a D3 ?
Electronic one works fine in my experience over 2 D3's and 5 years.
Only had one clutch slippage issue (MY05 D3) and was fixed with modified parts. Never had an issue again. Current MY08 D3 has never had an issue at all.

I know x-eng were working on one, but not financially viable for the non rally/dakar racer.
Be interested to know more when it comes out in the mag. £150 is a bargain too. Bodsys Brake Bible

Well I think to answer Simon - you only need to look on here to see the number of people that have had EPB issues. Personally if I find I can get a manual one for only £150 I've be first in line. Mine has been a pain in the a
Even the dealers admit that they are rubbish, they suggest cleaning and stripping once a year or after every off road trip
So I have to pay £180 to get it cleaned and stripped after every day off road? I never had issues with my D1! You don't even need a hand brake in an auto. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Yep. Its essentially 50/50. And that 50% half that have had issues I bet mostly have auto 'boxes
Use it or loose it is the consensus from LR and any good dealer.

I would bite their hand off, had it three times now in less than 3 years and this is in addition to the normal adjustment done at the service.
When I dropped mine off yesterday at the dealer, they had paperwork on the desk for other cars being booked in and amazingly nearly all of them had strip and adjust handbrake at the top of the list of work to do. I took the tech for a drive in mine to identify a noise and he kept using the EPB at lights etc and after the 5 or 6th time it screamed and I just said don't bother with it, it's useless and he just gave me a nod and said strip and clean again.
