I have an ARB bumper on the front of mine (fitted by the previous owner) - as rare as hens teeth to get.

I personally believe, again, the raptor alternative is about the only option at a reasonable rate.

Just out of interest and by no means wishing to sound like Victor Meldrew, but what's the legal position on fitting the ARB bumper (or similar) in the UK on a vehicle manufactured after the ban on "hard" bull bars?

It’s a very grey area for legality of it.

Depending on wording it’s either fine or not fine.
Bull bar is not fine.
Winch bumper, I think, but not 100%, is fine.

On an old thread, a site sponsor said that VOSA has said they were fine.

The UK supplier says this:

ARB PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

The ARB range includes several hundred part numbers, enabling ARB to offer frontal protection for the vast majority of 4x4s from around the globe. Deluxe bull bars*, coming with and without winch provision, Sahara bars and commercial bars are available, along with a selection of nudge bars for smaller vehicles.

However, vehicle protection doesn't end with a bar. Frequently it's door sills, front guards and lower rear panels that receive the most punishment, and for this reason, ARB also offers an extensive range of side and rear protection equipment. All our equipment is designed to be ultra functional, incorporating numerous features to improve the versatility of a vehicle, while maintaining maximum protection.

*Bull Bars strictly for off-road purposes only in the UK.

As others have said the wording of the law is a bit wooly and therefore the interpretation can be too? Whistle

MY understanding of the law is that a bull bar (much like this one) is illegal, however, this is a mount for forward mounted equipment (a winch) so this is legal.

I have the original receipt from the supplier and it says much the same re "off road use" and that I suspect is more about covering their own bottomse as there is a penalty for manufacturing and supplying this type of thing.

http://www.autostylinguk.co.uk/pdf/EU-Leg-Bull-Bars.pdf

Regarding my particular vehicle, it has now passed through three MOT's (one in my ownership) since fitting. I have a policeman live in my cul-de-sac and he has not said a word and my own father is a former police inspector and not long retired from the police service (as a civilian instructor) and his view was basically the same as mine regarding the wooliness of the law.

Would I have paid the £3,000 or so to have it fitted on a doner vehicle I bought without one?

Probably not.

Did it's presence influence my decision to buy the vehicle?

Damn straight, it is very menacing and this is a full time "hobby" vehicle to me, however, not as much as the bullet proof history and care by the former owner (and site user).

If a D3/D4 front bumper was made to a very close copy of the profile of the toffee ones, but out of a more resiliant material, would it ever be noticable?

I'd have thought it would be more of an issue with insurance companies rather than the thoughts of the Police. If your insurers have approved it for road use then all should be well.

A friend is thinking of buying a cheap D3 and using it mainly on his farm, but it will need to be road legal for towing a trailer on road. He wants a winch and ideally bull bars front and rear Shocked

That's why I'm asking, but I'm suggesting he needs to get any such mods approved by NFU. Thumbs Up

Hi Everyone, really appreciate the info.
We have decided to go with the following to test the water:-

D4 spotlight mounts
D3/4 sump guard

With a low profile, full roof roof rack following close after.

Im just waiting for them to be made at the moment - soon as they are ill post picks and try and do a group buy... I tried messaging Martin the other day and heard nothing back so think it might have been a random Martin... Soon as I have spoken with him, if he is happy ill get the but sorted...

Cheers

Might be interested in the sump guard but definitely interested in a swing away wheel carrier at the right money. A good design that doesnt sacrifice the rear parking sensors if possible Smile

It's not a 'bull bar' it's a 'winch bumper' that happens to have upper bars ....nothing illegal whatsoever ...if it was just a 'bull bar' alone then a different story Thumbs Up

I have an opposite lock fitted to my D3. I imported my D3 from Oz when I returned here. It's passed it's MOT and has also been noted on insurance declaration (as a Bull Bar as that's the only option they had). Not had any issues since I returned.

I also have an OL rear wheel carrier if any one wants to look at it and get some ideas.

I thought the vehicle year had something to do with whether they are legal or not?

Mines was built in April 2005. However, the DVLA in their infinite wisdom have decided it was built in January 2005 and have registered it as such.

Or could it be a "bull bar" that happens to have provision for an electric winch. As per the ARB wording:
