Been asked on a number of occasions what I use for mapping 'stuff' so here goes.
In the D3 we use a Garmin 276 that is connected to a Sony viao via usb. The Garmin has various maps that I drag from MapSource from the Viao into the Garmin depending where we are. The Garmin maps I use are City Navigator, Topo GB, Trip and waypoint manager, Morocco Topo.
In Addition to this we also use a GlobalSat BU-353 Water Proof USB GPS Receiver that’s plugged into a usb on the viao. This allows me to use Fugawi 1:50 or memory.map 1:50 at the same time as running the Garmin.
The good thing about the Garmin is that it comes with NRoute This is a navigation facility that runs just like a sat nav but with more options, and you simply click and select what maps you want to use and then load waypoints, routes, tracks. For instance I could stick the coordinates of the start of a green lane and NRoute will route me to that way point. If you are in Morocco and you have been given a list of way points NRoute will guide you to each waypoint in the order you select. So you are actually part of the route. Unlike the Fugawi or memory.map where you have to keep your iconor gps position on the track.
The 110 runs the newer Garmin 278 connected to an IBM ThinkPad X61 Tablet with the same set up as above. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Another good source of maps for Garmin is http://www.tracks4africa.com/
Their coverage of North Africa is quite sparse - but seems to be improving . It works on a contributory basis , so if you submit your tracks etc , you get free downloads and the general map coverage improves
