Other than Maps, what's new in 2012 SatNav update? |
|
Ok, I've got a MY2010 D4 HSE and am currently looking at getting the SatNav updated with 2012 maps, but when I asked for a quote I was told it was maps and software. So other than map updates, what else has been changed/improved in the new version?
Anyone had the update done?

I'm no expert as I only drove a MY11 for one weekend BUT I think there is a lot more functionality in my 12MY sat nav, including turns and instructions now display in the instrument binnacle screen too. More split screen options on main sat nav and a totally different layout on the main screen. I think routes and POI are more flexible and comprehensive.
The whole graphic interface for ALL the screen functions Audio, Setup, Off-road, are totally changed on MY12 I think.
Ireland's motorways seem to be on there now as well, for what that's worth
Hopethat helps.

Cheers Clive, yes I'm hoping that the update will also add the binnacle display function like on MY12, but knowing LR I suspect not. Oh well, here's hoping.
Unless Italy and the Euro goes bang tomorrow and we all follow it down the pan, lets face it there's a fair chance at the moment, I hope to have the time to get the D4 to a dealer and spend the money before Christmas. I'll update the thread with the changes I find.

Agree with Clive re the added the functionality.
There are also small but nice details such as brand name icons showing for fuel stations, McDonald's etc etc under the POIs.
I'm not sure that the non MY12 can ever be updated to be 100% comparable to the MY12s as IIRC there is new hardware underpinning the MY12s. For example I suspect that instrument panel nav display relies on some kind of signal out hardware as much as software. FFRR Vogue SE - Waitomo

Yes and I forgot, MY12 is totally HDD driven now that's why we have the 10 DISC CD MEMORY from the one slot system, as it's all stored on the HD and Maps are on HD not via a DVD player. I think upgrades are done by dealers' computers not via a CD as well - Just to get more cash out of us!! But we have the whole of Europe maps already in our systems from the word go.
I agree with RSK I would try and check which EXTRA bits you might get from MY12 upgrade as you might end up paying a lot and NOT get much of what your hoping for.

Our M11 D4 is due its first years service soon so I Will see if the Dealer (Beadle of Sidcup) can tell us what we get and how much it will cost for the 'upgrade' -- by the way our D4 is also HDD (no discs). LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

That's interesting re the HDD in your's Ted, sure my dealer said it was new for 12MY - Maybe it was the ability to play DVD videos without having the TV function spec'ed which I got mixed up with.
But I don't think you've got the "virtual " 10 cd autochanger have you?

Unnecessary quote removed
I confess that I have no idea as I seldom have music on in the car mainly just the radio! I don't even know if we have a CD slot --- BUT I do know we have an IPod connector and cable HOWEVER not sure what I do with it, other than leave it in the glove box ready for when we PX in 4 years time LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

All D4's have a HDD based system, however from the 2012 model you can now play videos and have the 10 disc virtual CD changer as well. Until the 2012 model you only had a 1cd unit, DAB, Radio, Ipod connection and USB connection as standard, however I'm glad I had the TV option as well
I have a 16gb Ipod Nano and a 8gb usb chip fitted in mine so have plenty of music to choose from.

I gave up on the 2010 Disco 4 satnav, it's so bad and maps years out of date. It took me by the weirdest route to LR Experience at Eastnor Castle, but Holland was the worst, and it couldn't even find Rotterdam Europort. I use a TomTom, it's cheap, intuitive, and it works properly.

I've never had a problem with the D4 SatNav, yes Ok a few old map points but nothing I didn't experience with my various previous TomToms and Ok, it has on 2 occassions taken me on routes I wasn't expecting, one through Holland on the way back from north Germany and it save me 2 hours, the other time it was no quick, but it was no longer or bussier then my choosen route either.
I think the biggest issue is the stup interface, it's complex compared with the TomTom, but once you get your head around teh LR/NavTec way of thinking it's ok, so I'm not will to give up on it quite yet.
