Maxing out alternator life.
Hi team
Reading about alternator failures at different millages I was wondering if I should change mine proactively or wait and maybe go for some kind of record of longevity. Most of the time folks out here have theirs replaced roughly around 100 -150 K miles. Men on the other hand is still good at 240 000 miles. Am I pushing my luck here, will it fail soon or don't bother until the failure happens ?

My view, if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

And you’re not far off double what mine achieved, ISTR it died at ~130k.
I'm sure there's a difference between the gas and diesel parts? Certainly there's different engine characteristics.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Leave it until it goes pop. Might as well get what you can out of it. Replaced mine the other week due to it going. Not sure how many miles it had done as was on when we brought the disco. Not a bad job to do to be honest. Looks worse than it is.

Thanks guys.
I bought a spare from Advanced Factors about two years a go as an proactive measure, but the old one is still kicking despite the regular off roading and going thru deep water many times.I guess, deep down I wanted to free up some room in the boot and stop driving around with spare alternator all this time, specifically when I go on long expeditions and extra room in the back is at premium.Cheers !

You could always just swap them out, as u have one, and keep the old one as a backup in the garage/shed/man cave/kitchen.

It probably has a two year warranty on it.....so fit it to confirm it's a good un.

hahaha.. good point ! I have always like to replace aging parts proactively. It is no fun being stranded on busy New Jersey highway or remote wilderness area somewhere in Maine or any other less populated state out here. But I am still on original alternator, starter, coolant pump, fuel pump etc.I have been lucky I guess, This amazing machine has never let me stranded.. yet..
