mega flush vs fresh gear box oil??? |
|
I've read about having a 'mega flush' (I think) done - is that just new gear box oil?
Just noticed the faintest of 'clunk' from the 'box so would like to get something sorted. formerly Disco3Ben

yes its replacing all the gearbox oil.
draining the sump only replaces half the oil (unless you disconnect the cooler line and pump it out)

Hi, I think you need both.
The gearbox has a filter in and if your oils contaminated/bust then you really need to replace that. Pan off etc and some people put in a better metal filter I believe.
Then, you also need a mega flush as as said, lots of fluid lurks in the cooler/Torque converter or whatever and that cant be drained by the basic pan-off approach.
The above is what fixed my issues, the first part (pan-off) improved it but it wasn't 100% until it was flushed. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

If I had my time again I wouldn't change the filter/sump.
The metal ones leak
And the plastic ones are very difficult to refit due to a cross member in the way.
The filter wasn't in bad condition.

I, too, only mega flushed mine.
I talked with an Indy here and he said that well known British manufacturer starting with a B and ending with H had had a faulty batch of metal ones where the welded seams were bad and had started leaking. Seemed a bit peeved. The metal pan also rusts. Replacing with another plastic integrated filter and pan one seemed such a chore that it isn’t worth it.
Decided after that to just have it flushed. That’s almost 19000 km ago.

I talked to my Indy about this. He doesn't do megaflush. He said that what he does is this.
Drain oil, replace sump/filter, refill with fresh oil. He said this would NOT replace all the old oil, so maybe about 50%. Then he runs it up for a while, repeats the drain and refill procedure. This he says, will replace about 75% of the old oil. Whilst admittedly contaminating the new oil too. 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

If he doesn’t have the specialist equipment needed to flush the oil entirely, then that’s really the only option left to him.
I’d not be happy for the fresh oil to have a 25% loading of contaminated and worn out oil. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Bodsy would be the man to ask for this.
He has a machine and travels the country flushing boxes and flashing ECUs and such. He has a forum thread about this service here.
I’m having my box flushed by him on Friday so can let you know how it goes.

i think thats the best approach. i had mine changed last year and to replace with a plastic one is headache. what i decided is that every year (around 15k miles) will change the oil (sump plus cooling pipes) and move on. no more filter change.

Just to update and say Bodsy flushed my autobox on Friday, together with a transmission software update.
I’ve been driving over the weekend, just to see before reporting back, and it is definitely smoother!
So worth having done I think!
And a big thanks to Bodsy - very professional and a job well done.
