Regarding Google Maps, the underlying maps are stored locally on my devices but for some unknown reason, my ‘places’ have to be downloaded every time. I can only assume the designers and programmers of Maps think that everywhere in the world has a cellular signal.

If I could download and store my ‘places’ on my device, problem solved.

But I can’t, so it isn’t!

I used to travel to Boise, Idaho regularly with work. Had the whole state downloaded on phone. Made sure data was turned off and Google maps using downloaded section worked perfectly.

When you go out, turn all mobile data off and then it should work Thumbs Up

Problem is, I have 2500+ ‘places’ identified on my Google map of the North Highlands. Google only downloads those within the immediate vicinity of where the GPS positions your device. This is why I need data available so as I move about, Maps downloads the ‘places’. Turning off data doesn’t help.

You might like to have a read of this https://www.motorhomewifi.com/product-guide/ I have been using one of their 4G compact units on our motor home for about 6 months with a high degree of success. For example last weekend we were getting 2gig of broadband in a location where mobiles on the same network had no data service at all.

This is the unit we have, external aerial on the roof and WiFi router for up to 10 users in the wardrobe.

Hope it helps

This looks promising - thanks!

UPDATE: I think this could be my solution. I can use my existing EE sim and put it in the router then just connect my iPad over WiFi to the router. The antenna can mount onto my Prospeed roof rack and the router can mount under the divers seat.

The only problem is where do I drill a 25mm hole to get the antenna cables through into the cabin....

I think I’ll take the plunge and order one up!

Unless it has changed, Vodafone Sure Signal is effectively a (very) small area mobile base station that connects over your fixed internet connection.
At least that's what the 3 I've had have been.

So...if you're away from base/home they won't help your issue at all.

O2 used to be appalling for us at home, but their TuGo app worked okay so we used them.
Then they discontinued the app and we went onto Three, who provided good external signal and just about signal in the house.
Then they mast location changed and we don't get Three at all.
So we moved to GiffGaff (O2) and actually get moderate 4G signal, so much so that I use it for Zoom conferences and video uploads from the house rather than the slower DSL connections.

I've found the Android Offline Maps app works nicely, but prefer the functionality of Waze and, close second, Google Maps, now that we have better mobile signal/bandwidth.
That said, we have about a 20 mile mobile black hole between here and Inverness.
