Depends what you mean by the 'best'?
Best off road ability
Best towing capability
Best performance
Best MPG
Best looks or cosmetic enhancements
Easy car to modify but the list is endless unless you specify what you actually want! 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

A good set of tyres! Makes it look good and helps light offroad.
I'm running AT2's at the moment and I love them but sadly they don't make them anymore and I'm not hearing great things about the AT's - even from strangers Who knows what I'll replace them with.
Mpg .... erm park up somewhere and look at it ,,,, it'll look great and be doing the best fuel economy you'll ever get

It's such a personal and subjective thing though.
For light off road use, I'd suggest a nice set of all terrain tyres such as the new general Grabber AT, also fit a sump guard to protect the underside at the front. Both will give it a more purposeful look (although MPG will be slightly down due to the tyres).
As I'm sure you will have seen from the form, the list of possible mods is huge and it will depend always on your budget of course. The D3 is so capable that neither of my suggestions are essential for light off road use but both will improve things.
With my current D3 I initially spent money on sorting out the mechanicals (new suspension arms and bushes), then had the paint machine polished before the cosmetic mods started. Then I upgraded the alloys to 19"HSE's, upgraded the lights to Xenon's, fitted cruise control and audio switches to a new smooth leather wheel, mud-flaps, front fogs and washers came next! As you have an SE, you already have most of this stuff though 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
