Cracked inlet manifold

So smoke test has identified a crack in the inlet manifold which will need to be replaced.

Questions:
how long does replacing the manifold take?
Could the old one be repaired?
Who in their right mind would use plastic for such a part under high pressure?
How common is this and wouldn't such a major part failing be dealt with by a recall?

Thanks in advance for your enlightened responses Very Happy

Manufacturing defect.

Mine & others replaced foc by Landrover.
I believe that warranties are unlikely to pay up because it is a manufacturing defect.

Right 7.7 hours, Left 8.2 hours according to TSB below.

Hi, please excuse my ignorance as I haven't got a clue about rules/regulations/liabilities, but if it's a manufacturer defect isn't it them that are liable if fault occurs as long as service and maintenance is all upto date.
Think mine falls into the vin category, oh Censored Shocked

Manufacturing fault BUT...

So to get a cracked manifold replaced under LRs tech bulletin:

Report restricted performance to dealer
book in AND pay for diagnostics test
IF they decide it's the manufacturing fault
THEN they will replace the part

What remains unclear is whether you have to pay for all or any of the labour.

Diagnostic test approx. 2hrs Full day without vehicle
Repair time min. 8hrs at least one day. more likely two without vehicle

So 10hrs @ £168ph = £1680 assuming the part is replaced under 'warranty' or an additional £200+ if not

That is "CRAZY" it's unbelievable that a manufacturing defect won't be rectified by the manufacturer/supplier & warranty won't/might not cover it, so the customer gets shafted due to someone's negligence. Or completely Censored Censored quality part.. Mad
I feel for you fester61 if you don't mind me asking what make year & mileage & is it LR warranty..

This is an interesting question.
Should a manufacturer warrant an item for ever?
Should a manufacturing defect be covered regardless of age?
Should there be the three year warranty and that’s it?
If your mobile phone broke after the years warranty, would you expect them to fix it?
I’m not taking a stance on this, just asking some questions.

I’m not talking about safety recalls, but non safety manufacturing faults.

Yes breaking it down like that does defenatly make me think a bit more logically, I surpose im being Byist as I'm a customer, but to me (again I'm just a customer I have no idea regarding rules/regulations etc as a manifactuar/supplier) something deemed as a defect is something not quite as good as it should be or might not be able to do what it's intended for, I also don't no how it's gets its title but assume that there has been more than average failures/faults with it to be classed as a manufacturer defect, (I'm probably way off because I don't read small print as much as I should Mr. Green ) but if a vehicle is maintained within the guide lines & recommendations it just seems a tad unfair to me to charge someone nearly £200 hr for approx 10hrs to rectify a known defect.

Stevenorman... yes now I can see it's not black and white & are many grey areas. Embarassed Thumbs Up

Steve Norman, all very valid.

However the tech bulletin makes it clear that the parts at fault were not made to the correct specification 'material thickness and fillet radius of the valve cover not to specification' therefore were not of saleable standard.
Everything we buy has an expected lifespan attached and some, nowdays, designed in obsolescence (usually day after warranty ends). High value items should be expected to last that much longer especially major elements such as engine parts that are not subject to mechanical wear. Heat and pressure yes but no mechanical wear.

I think the issue here, for me, is that they know the part was wrong yet it is the customer that has to jump through hoops and pay through the nose to get the quality they originally paid a heck of a lot for.

Gilly1, to answer your question it's a 2010 D4 3.0 TDV6 XS with 96k on the clock.

I tend to agree. It's a lot of money to pay out for a part that has obviously been modified to last longer now.
So what do people think is fair for this & other parts? 3 years, 7 years? The lifetime of the engine? Should Landrover pay up until the vehicle is scrapped?

What I feel is unfair is when you buy a warranty, either Extended Landrover, or other & they say, sorry we aren't paying, as it's a manufacturing defect. You go to Landrover & they say, sorry, it's out of manufacturers 3 year warranty.

Hmm.
