How much space is left in the 3 brake light part.
I have a garmin handheld GPS and I would like to build in a external antenna.
I don't like how they did it on my D3 during the G4 challenge.
I also don't want it on the roofrack so I was thinking behind the 3rd brake light panel. So does anyone have a picture off the available space there?
I believe the factory GPS is also their I assume 2 GPS antenna's don't interfear each other, Do they?
ThanksRoel

Hi Roel,
I was looking at mounting a camera in the 3rd brake light over the holidays and also thought about putting a GPS receiver in there.
To be honest, on the left hand side it is pretty much impossible as the metal panel covers the back of the brake light assembly. On the right hand side, there is a small opening where the wires and washer pipe goes, but I don't think it was big enough to get an aftermarket GPS receiver in there....
The easiest thing would be for you to just pull of the trim and have a look - it's a very quick job 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

I am working night shift on the moment in Zurich CH and the D3 is parked outside the Hotel covered in snow. So I thought I just ask the question here or wait till its warmer. Most of the time asking a question here is quicker then looking yourselves. Roel

The problem you will have is getting the high level brake light lens off - its glued on and will break if you try to remove it.

I put an aftermarket GPS antenna in when I broke my high level brake light. Just fixed it to the underside of the top of the plastic. Yup, a PITA to remove ( best to get a grinder into it, carefully) and when you replace make sure you prime the plastic,“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Not sure about space, but GPS aerial is passive so no interference between them. The Garmin aerial is small and magnetic, why not just pop it on the roof at the front in front of the sunroof?
Don't expect the UK to help much, 8cm of snow on our D3 from last night

I have my GPS (MTK chipset) receiver hidden above the 1st row courtesy lights, stuck to the inside of the metal roof and it works perfectly 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

It may depend on the Garmin unit Roel has, my old (like ancient) 12XL is not very sensitive, can loose signal in tall buildings even with external aerial. My 3 year old Nuvi has a Sirfstar chipset and gets a really strong signal with the inbuilt aerial, and monster signal with the external. As long as its a modern chipset internal mounting should be fine I would guess.

May not work so well when the rack is full? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
