Mud Flaps

Apologies if this has been asked before, recently joined the forum.

Just had my Discovery 3 for 5 days now and is only the base 5 seat model (still dead chuffed though). I was wondering what people thought of mud flaps, are they needed, do the wheels throw the dirt up the sides, or are they an unnecessary expense. Wont be of roading, just pulling the horsebox in and out of fields.

Thanks in advance.

The mudflaps are not rubbery and flexible but if you're going to just tow a horse float and travel on grassy fields then they will not get damaged.

My D3 is nearing 1 year old. I've replaced one rear mudflap but it has cracked again and it matches the other 3 cracked mudflaps. They aren't hugely expensive and they can be treated as consumable and replaced as they fall off.

I still think they are a worth while extras as they help to keep the water spray and the mud spray from the tyres down.

They are good for any road where stones might be flicked up, and also prevent a lot of mud splashing up.

But, if you want to go onto soft sand, you need to remove them as, like PCH said, are not flexible and act like little bulldozer blades.

dealer just told me they no longer put the front flaps on at the factory and that they cost $187 (very expensive I think) so when mine arrives iI intend to make my own from some old conveyor belt as I have seen this done on many 4x4's

I am "negotiating" about mud flaps with my dealer just now. When I bought the car (delivered Mar 06), we used a price list from Nov 04. The mud flaps were included in the price then (for SE and HSE). But my car was delivered without flaps (apart from myself complaining Laughing ) and that does correspond to the Jan 06 pricelist (in Germany).

The price listed for the flaps in the 04 pricelist was €150, which must be around the (US) $187. The dealer has only said till now that they are "expensive" but I expect to hear exactly in a few days. If I do go ahead and order them, I hope I can convince the dealer to install them free, as they should have been a factory fit (otherwise I will do it myself).

My D3 came with the mud flaps on. Within a month the rears had ripped off. I actual got them replaced under warranty. My argument was that the car is a 4x4 vehicle etc etc. However when I ripped the front ones off they told me they would not be replaced under warranty Big Cry I have replaced 2 or three sets. I think they cost about £45 per set.
I have now given up with the LR ones so I removed the remains of the flaps and I have made new flexible ones out of Neoprene rubber sheet. They don’t look that bad and do the job.

Andrew, any chance of showing how you attach them and where can you get the material from?

I was going to fork out on LR ones but yours look fine and will work properly.

Cheers

I will post more pics when it stops raining. Basically I used the existing fixings on the inner wing and drilled 2 more holes about 25mm in from each side to provide extra support plus one at the bottom of inner wing. I used 4 repair washers (painted black) of various sizes fixed with black self tapping screws. Most industrial supplies will stock Insertion Rubber this will be better and cheaper than Neoprene and you can get it reinforced.

Much more practicle than the L/R ones I had fitted as part of my "deal". I've only driven across fields & easy tracks so far, but I can see that they probably wouldn't last long over rough terrain. They do appear to work however in that I don't get spray up the sides, but I haven't seen how it is without them fitted!
AndrewS, are those Goodyear MTR's? How are they for road use? If I go to the highlands of Scotland this winter, I was thinking about getting a set.

AndrewS,

I like the looks of your flaps too and, in the light of your experience, it looks as though it would be a better way to go than the LR flaps. Look forward to seeing more pics.
