Hello,
Just wondering if anyone can help? In a bit of a pickle...
I drove to the train station (1st time this year) due to the rain. Pulled up in a rush and think I turned the car in ‘R’. Locked the car, walked off, came home 12+ hrs later and the battery was flat... the start of the saga...
Call SWMBO to come and jump me, no luck. Then called RAC who came out 4hrs later. They tested the battery and it was all good. They then tried jumpstarting the car, nothing, they them took the key to reset it then boom, up and running.
Then the chap said “I have a CTEK MSX3.8 for £50 if you want to buy one”.... long story short, at 1am he fit the CTEK and off I drove.
Connect the CTEK to mains the next day and charged for 2.5days and tried to start it; nothing.
Do I need to do a Hard reset? Keep charging? Is the CTEK not powerful enough?
Anyone any idea?
Thanks for advice guys!

How do you know that the battery isn’t shot? Using one of these on a decent battery will work wonders, but it should make little difference to an already dead battery. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Good point. Will check.
They [the RAC] did a 15min battery check that evening and all was good. Makes me think I just need to charge longer... 2016 D4 Landmark

My own 3.8amp CTek will fully charge my battery in about 6 hours during regular use, never has it taken longer.

This doesn’t sound like it’s directly related to the battery. If he couldn’t get anything when he tried to jump it, it’s not battery.
Did you try lights on and try and start? If the lights would go dim I’d say battery but if they stayed on and wouldn’t start, I’d look elsewhere. It may have been a coincidence that a reset key started the engine but it could just as easily be a key/immobiliser issue (although I’d expect an error message if that were the case).

Make sure your battery terminals are secured and solid....
I have had issues with bad connections even when you think its secure...

Both the batteries on my MY16 (March 2016) died during the its 3rd year and were replaced under warranty.
The main battery was weak for only a short time, 2 or 3 days and then totally failed. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Could be a poor earth to the engine, try connecting a jump lead from the battery -I’ve to a metal part of the engine. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Only discovered this by accident when JLR rescue came out to a friend. D4 had just come out of Main Dealer after suspension arm work. The starter motor cable MUST be aligned as per Service instructions. His wasn't and the starter was dead until the Assist bloke straightened it.
Went back to Dealer the next morning who were embarrassed to say the least. Just a thought.

there must be more to that ? if a cable is bent but unbroken, it will still carry current but may have damaged some of the strands and cause a hotspot in the cable. overtime this will cause the cable to fail at that point.
Many years ago I went to replace a "faulty" starter motor on a mate's Cortina and when I let it hang on the supply lead, it dropped to the floor ... the wire itself had broken inside the insulation. Maybe that had been bent ? couldn't tell from looking at the insulation.
if insulation has rubbed through on something so is shorting out, straightening will get it working but insulation needs fixing. .
