After months of waiting, our D4 arrived the other week. One of the first orders of business was to install a 16GB USB stick with some "backup music" when we're out of radio range (on an amazingly tiny USB stick that hardly sticks out).
I created a simple 1-level folder structure ("Rock", etc), and all tracks are named so they sort alphabetically in the right order (<artist>-<album>-<disc>-<track>-<title>). However, when I'm browsing a given folder, some tracks show up randomly out of order. This problem happens in multiple different folders, but when connected to a PC or Mac, sorting by filename is correct.
Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? Is the nav system actually sorting on something other than filename?

try remove track listing number"0"before number. zeros maybe not read but counted as a unit marker
so 15 comes before 01
then try
if you view files on pc as list view arw thwy in correcy order

Yes, I have confirmed the files sort correctly on the pc. It's just in tr rover they are out of order.
I'll try removing the leading zeros, but that generally causes alpha sorting to put track 10 immediately after track 1. Look for more soon.

Liked that little USB you highlighted a lot - so ordered one. At £8 a bargain.
Been thinking of using the USB for music for a bit as SWMBO doesnt have iPhone and when I am not in the car needs her tunes. This will be ideal - if I can get it to work.
Now the dumb question - Do you create the tracks on itunes. All of my music is on iTunes and I dont fancy loading all my CD's into some PC package.

This will convert the M4a files that are used in iTunes into an MP3 format for the USB.
If the link doesn't work just Google "iTunes to MP3" 'cos there are others

I think it reads the date and time stamp on the file too - so it may be showing tracks and folders in the order that they were copied to the USB stick.

My music is a combination of AAC files from iTunes (files ending in .m4a) and MP3s I created using dbPowerAmp. I use dbPowerAmp to convert CDs because it has a great "batch" ripping mode (keep feeding CDs in the drive and everything else is automatic, including artwork and ejecting when done).
Lossy-to-lossy transcoding (e.g. converting bewteen AAC and MP3 and vice-versa) reduces the sound quality, which you may notice. Unless your iTunes AAC files don't play correctly, you don't need to convert them. See this link for some more details, and some heads up examples. Someone at Land Rover knows this, as the US manual actually explicitly warns of using low bitrate files!
Some older iTunes purchases may be ".m4p" files, which will not play on anything but an Apple authorized device (e.g. not a USB stick). This only applies to iTunes purchases - any CD you've imported into iTunes should work without issue.

It's been a few days, but I can provide one status update: timestamps do not seem to affect the sort order for USB files. I validated this by adjusting the creation and modification times using a small program I wrote. No dice.
I'm going to test some other theories, including that the navigation stops sorting after a certain number of characters this week and will update everyone on what I find.

After some additional research, I've found the problem. It turns out, the navigation isn't actually sorting by filename at all!
The electronics are instead relying on the order the files appear on disk. A lot of the time, this is going to be the "right" alphabetical order, but it isn't a guarantee. In this case, the "Tom Petty-Wildflowers-01-15-Wake up Time.mp3" file appeared out of order on the disk. Most operating systems silently fix this by re-sorting the files using whatever criteria you want. I was able to reproduce the issue by dropping to a command line and using the standard "dir" command in windows. Sure enough, the track was out of order.
After some more research, this isn't a unique problem - a lot of older MP3 players don't handle this properly. Someone much more knowledgeable about filesystems sorted this out and wrote a small program to fix it. All you need to do is download the utility, run it on your disk, and the issue is fixed. It's so useful, I went ahead and stored a copy of it directly on the memory stick so it's always available.
