I need a trip around the Boston MA area, any ideas

So the people we were staying with in Boston have messed up the organisation and I need to find an alternative.

Choices are,

1. Stay with them for part of the trip, but go elsewhere for a week.
2. Just arrange something else for the whole two weeks.

The problem is, I'm there from the 10th to the 24th of August so I don't have a lot of time to organise anything.

I visit Boston a lot and don't find it that interesting. I'd do a circular road trip through Maine to Quebec, Montreal and come back through Vermont and New Hampshire. Thumbs Up

I would too, but unfortunately I have wife and teenage son in tow! Thinking about a trip to NYC by train..

Hmmmm, NYC is sweltering summer heat packed with tourists, or a beautiful drive as above, taking in Kennebunkport, on the way up and Wolfeboro (Lake Winniepesaukee) on the way down....using the Kancamagus highway.

No decision IMO.

Agree. NY will be sweltering and just crazy. Hire a conferable Mustang and have some fun. Thumbs Up

I live currently just outside NYC. It is hot and it is full of tourists, but there is some really amazing stuff to see.

I haven't yet been to the 9/11 memorial, but lots of friends and family have and without a doubt describe it as incredible. I think it alone would be worth the trip. There are great views of the city from the ESBuilding. It is an impressive place to walk around.

Boston will fill a day. Some cool stuff to see.

Driving to Maine is also nice.

Train between Boston and NYC is easy but book as early as you can to get cheaper tickets.

I once did a Philly -> NYC -> Boston -> Niagara Falls -> Buffalo -> Philly road trip in a Thunderbird. Sadly it looked more like the one in the foreground than the background...

If you're starting in Boston I'd skip Philly so it would probably work out about 1000miles. I liked Boston a lot. Cape Cod is beautiful as is Maine. And there are plenty of national parks and lakes on that route.

Niagara falls is a day's drive but very much worth it if you've never seen it.

Cape Cod is worthwhile but if you've a teenager in tow he might find much of it boring - but a ferry trip across to Provincetown should get the thumbs up.

Lots of other good stuff North and West of Boston. Agricultural fairs are a good bet, there are a couple in August, see here:

Thanks everyone.
Thinking about Cape Cod, where would you recommend?

Did a day trip around Boston in 2004. The most interesting thing the middle aged female guide could find to talk about was the “Big Dig” where the roads were all being lowered into tunnels/underpasses.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Because the prospective host has now asked that we move out for about half of the week, we have cancelled the trip.
