Thanks for all the advice guys .... given me loads to look at and at least now I know what I'm looking for. Did the trick with the radio controls today to display the volts which I also found on this forum ... really useful stuff.
Not quite a hijack, but is there a datecode on the battery at all, and if so how do you read it ???
Mine is a LR battery, but as I have only has the thing a year, don't know if it is original. If it is original, probably due for a change.
TIA

Mine has a date on it on the top (I think) either WEEK / 05 or MONTH / 05, which would be about right. I wouldn't change it until it shows signs of failing TBH, I've had batteries that have lasted anything from 2 yrs to 8 yrs. Mind you, particularly with the D3, it's sometimes the alternator that fails first, and that predicament then kills the battery, so you do have to be a bit wary.

Yep - agree with DN ... alternator failure was the cause of my battery eventually giving up the ghost. Although the LR dealer price on the new alternator and fitting made me cry proper tears of pain !

The battery I got from a Land Rover dealer in January was not a LR018605 but a LR018609 which was made by Varta.

Main thing is that if you got it from a stealer you have a 3 year guarantee. I keep my invoice in the glove box. Was told that where ever I was in the UK, if I had battery issues take the invoice to any dealer and they'll swap it out.
Sorry again for the Hijack, but wondered if someone could confirm my thoughts.
Didn't quite find the datecode, but found "27 5KF" on the top edge, could this be it ??
As mentioned before, am getting some bongs on startup after having left it for a day or so, so thought I'd get the multimeter out. Bear in mind this vehicle was last started last night with a short run and a long run on saturday.
Unlocked, Bonnet Up, no keys in ignition = 11.9 V
Unlocked, Bonnet Up, keys in position 2 = 11.2 V
Cranking = 9.9 V
Initial idle = 13.2 V
Rev to 1500 rpm = 15.0 V
Back to idle = 15.0 V which it maintains if I start turning lights on, seats, screen etc etc
Switch off = 13.5 V dropping slowly
I am thinking the battery is not holding charge properly and cranking volts are too low, but the alternator / regulator appears okay ??
Any thoughts welcome
TIA

Have just replaced my battery after 4 years of life on old one
all the on board computers are very sensitive to voltage levels and differentials
I was getting errors on everything - including HDC
many items shut down - eg radio had "low voltage" splashed across the screen - cute
car was very sluggish
The new battery is made by Varta for Landrover
90 Amphr
RC 150 min
950 cca - note that this used to be 850 I think
I cannot find this spec in Varta catalog and must be new as it exceeds their top of the range spec
cost A$330 and probably prove to be worth every penny
cost another A$70 to reset all the computers
I would not trust a "joe bloggs" el cheapo min spec - no way

Hi disco_doozle,
I don't know which Optima Red Top would physically fit into the D3 "bay", but I see that the MAXIMUM CCA of ALL Optima Red Tops is 815.
The original spec for the TDV6 was 825CCA, which, it would seem, has now increased to 900CCA.
