NEW BUMPER AND FOGS FITTING TO 55 PLATE BASE DISCO 3 |
|
Hi all, could I have some advice please?
Is it possible to retro fit a new bumper with fog lights to my 55 plate 5 seat base model disco 3? Having changed a bulb today I have found wiring on the loom for fogs and I realise I will require a new light switch inside.
However, the Land Rover Dealership are under the impression that the computer will have to be remapped to recognise the fog lights, costing £280!!!
Any advice much appreciated before I waste my money.
Many thanks,

Welcome T
Its just a case of buying a set of fog lights, cutting the holes in your existing bumper, get a new lights switch and off you go.
I've never heard of having remapping done. Sounds like they are havin a laugh at your expense !
If you take off your bumper its actually marked inside as to where you cut the holes so couldnt be easier.
You need any help just shout, plenty have done the mod on here. A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

A search will bring up lots of info for this, in summary:
1. New bumper not strictly required as you can cut the holes out of your existing bumper. Even the mounting holes are there for the lamps.
2. Hardware required is fog lamps, bezels, wiring harness and switch. (cost = £160 ish)
3. ECU doesn't need programming unless you really want the indication on the dash to tell you their on (IMHO).

Many thanks, I thought it was going to be an easy (ish) job. Do the fogs come with the little bit of wiring to attach to the plug on the loom or are are they extra?
And... How easy does the bumper come off? Without wrapping it around a treee of course LOL

The loom for the fogs comes with the kit I remember - The Large One should be around today/ tomorrow if you wanted to get a rate off him for the bits you'll need
Bumper held on with various screws/ bolts here and there as you can imagine but nothing too daunting. All in will probably take you a couple of hours on a lazy Saturday.
You'll see the attachments at the top of the bumper once you remove the grill and headlights. There are 4 underneath I think and then you'll have those behind the wheel arches at either side. A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

I modified mine without taking the bumper off but I've never heard anyone else do it that way. I removed a bit of the arch liner so I could view the cut out markings. Then I used a drill to go around the inside of the cutouts and finished off with the jig saw holding the base of it in my hand so not to scratch the bumper . The plastic is so easy to cut with a jigsaw it's like a knife through butter and in my opinion better than using a stanley knife as there is less risk of slipping and causing a mark.
When i did the second side I didn't even remove the inner wheel arch trim - just made a hole and used my finger (or a mirror) to find the outline of the hole to be created. Took about 1 hour to cut out both sides.
cost of parts from a really old thread:
OK parts cost £124.20 from Nick at Yeovile
Harness £6.06
Bezzels £6.06
Lamps £100.00
Switch £20.00
-20% + Vat = £124.20

Ron P,
I'll certainly take them off your hands for £60 squid. Am I right in thinking the wiring is just the bits between the lamps and the wiring loop near the bumper - probably 8" - 12" long.
How can I get in touch with you,
Cheers,
Glenn

There is just 1 piece of wiring I believe (haven't actually got round to wiring mine in yet). That goes from the fogs to a connector just under the drivers side light unit, it will have a cap on the socket when not used to stop water ingress.

Iain,
That makes sense. I have found the adapter/plug so there must be a long wire to the near side light and a shorter one to the off side one.
I'll let you know when I get one.

could you buy the harness and connect other lights to it? or does it have some magical trickery that means it only works with LR parts?
