The detailing bug?

I never knew was "detailing" was until I started to read this forum. I've not washed the car since February but I've finally had a day off when I could practise all I've learned. All I can say is WOW - I think you'll agree, it's come up great, and people have already asked me how old the disco is because it looks like new again!

For those of you into the art of detailing, this is how I achieved the effect.

1/ I washed the car using an old sponge I found at the back of the garage and the single bucket method, (I've only got one). The spray foam effect was obtained with lashings of Fairy liquid and turning the tap on really fast.

2/ The trick is to dry the car really quickly before the hard water leaves lime marks. I did this with a towel borrowed from the washing basket and returned before SHMBO even noticed. Good tip - used towels work better than freshly washed ones? Not sure why.

3/ The wheels had months of baked on brake dust so using advice from here, I invested in two tins of Mr Muscle oven cleaner. The foam covers the wheels easily and you can immediately see the brown brake dust falling off. I'm told it's best to leave this on for around 30 minutes, but after having a cup of tea and a quick row about using stuff from the washing basket, it turned out to be more like an hour. Just hose down with plenty of clean water and they come up brilliantly - like new.

4/ Next I attacked the plastic wheel arches and bumpers with handfuls of peanut butter (smooth SunPat extra creamy). There's something in this mix that just sucks the old polish and dirt marks right off. More clean water with a dash of Fairy and it wipes off with ease. I'm sure the bits of butter that are jammed in between the arches and the body work will dissolve in the rain and until then my cat has even helped remove those hard-to-get-to lumps.

5/ Why do chamois leathers always go rock hard after you hang them in the garage to dry? Anyway, a few rubs over the glass and it was starting to work again... Finished.

Looks like it's straight out of the showroom.
