New D4 - quiet whine from steering column whilst turning

I got tired of being stressed and stuck on-road with my X5, which replaced my Land Cruiser, so after 3 months decided to ignore the bad reputation and go for a D4 despite the very chunky price tag.

What an excellent car - I can't think of another that is so well finished yet competent both on and off-road.

My only gripe (so far) is that when moving at low speeds I hear a whine / squeal from the area of the steering column when turning either direction and prior to hitting the stops. This is infuriating and LR sent out an AA "engineer" who said the issue was the switch surround not being centralised correctly and rubbing. So, booked it into the local dealer and it was returned later that day minus squeal - excellent, however only for one day.

So I'm not sure if they tried to repair the original switch surround (they'd already said there was a long lead time on the switch surround) and it worked temporarily, or is this a common fault?

Anyone else experienced this one or have any ideas?

I have had the same problem, but it is intermittent. Mostly not there. There for a day or two, then not there for some weeks Exclamation

Maybe it's a North of Scotland thing Question

Same on mine - sounds like a distant two-tone and had me looking in the rear-view for an emergency service vehicle a couple of times until I twigged. I can live with it. After the trials and tribulations of my D3 it's a minor niggle and inconsequential. Just one of those characteristics that makes us Land Rovers so much. Whistle

Yep, mine has developed this after about 7,500 kms - only occurs in carparks and comes and goes. Will mention to the dealer when it has its 12,000 health check. Seems to be very minor and the only "fault" so far. Very Happy

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with the problem so would be good if a solution is found by Land Rover. I'll ask again when it's in for service.

it does sound as though something is rubbing / misaligned as bearings and hydraulic pumps don't make that noise so afraid I'm not putting it down as an endearing characteristic.

Sounds similar to a noise my D4 XS had - I would liken to the sound of denim rubbing. It was only apparent at low speeds and most noticeable when the car was warm.

I took it to the dealers and after a bit of invetsigation by LR a seal was replaced (I think) which fixed the problem completely.

Thanks HTH, that sounds like the same problem. I'll raise this with the dealer and see if we get anywhere and will be sure to let you know.

Cheers.

Solution - no more squeaking

The Disco has now done 6,000 miles and was in the dealers for 4 days whilst the fault was found and spares sourced and shipped up to Aberdeen. Problem is resolved and, as HTH advised, it was a seal in the steering column that was damaged. My advice, for what it's worth, is to ensure these problems are highlighted then repaired. Hopefully the engineers designing future models will be aware of the common failures and get it right next time around.

PS Great support from Town & County in Aberdeen. They're not living down to expectations.

Hello. Mine had the same problem. Dealer mentioned lr have a bulletin out about it and a seal needs to be replaced. Hopefully that will cure it.

Apologies for resurrecting an old post but I have this problem on my 2012 MY. Its started in the last few days at around 5000 miles. A post below mentions that LR have a TSB out for the problem relating to the replacement of a seal. Anyone know the number or have the details of the TSB.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Andy.

Ps booked in to dealers tomorrow

Thanks for the reply. Mine went in and dealer informed me that it needed a new steering rack. They got it next day and fitted it same day. Great service from Guy Salmon in Sheffield as ever who looked after my RRS for 4 years. Steering feels much better now.

Good luck with yours

The D3 had a new steering column before they cured the whine but I then had a grinding noise at full lock.... the stops needed to be re-greased on the steering rack. Once that was done I had no more problems.

Would have thought that they would have designed that out of the D4 though. Maybe wishful thinking!
