- Solved - New engine - won't start

Hi all,

I have just rebuilt the engine of my 2005' D3. I started from the block and rebuilt i all with parts from my engine. A nice 1 week job.
Now, the engine is back in the car but it does't want to start...
Engine is turning, fuel is primed properly. I have fuel on the injectors, and fuel pressure read on the Hawkeye increases when cranking.

I checked with my Hawkeye and I get the following fault codes :

P140A : low tension on EGR circuit, LH side
P0341 : Camshaft sensor
U0155 : communication lost with module
U0401 : Unvalid signal from ECU/PCM
U0100 : communication lost with ECM
P0641 : A circuit reference tension
P181B : Actuator solenoid
C1A55 : Ignition switch input

I am not too concerned yet by the EGR / gearbox / park brake errors. I tried first to get the engine running.
I tried to swap the camshaft sensor. I have 2 of them. It did not change anything.
I can clear the fault, but as soon as the engine cranks, the fault comes back.

I am sure about my timing. I did it peacefully on the bench.
I have doubts about the position of the ring at the back of the crankshaft. I installed it with the specific tool. But I found that it was a little on the back of the place.
Still, with the camshaft sensor or without the camshaft sensor, I can read rpm on the Hawkeye. It shows about 140-150rpm when cranking.

What I don't understand is that I have this P0341 and C1A55 faults...
How can I check the root cause for these problems ?

I tried swapping sensors. No change.
Next is checking timing ?
How about wiring ?

Thanks for you help !

Did you put the flex-plate back in the correct position so that the crank shaft sensor picks up correctly. The other possibility is that you do not have all connectors plugged in correctly.

Hi Globetrotter,

Thanks for the feedback.

There is only 1 way to put the flex plate. It does not fit on the other side, does it ?
And the starter will not be able to crank the crankshaft, will it ?

Plus, there is no sensor on the flyplate itself is it ?

Which connector(s) are you thinking about : the ECU connectors ?

The ECU and TCM. the car will not start if the gearbox thinks it is not in park

Is the cam sensor plugged in at the front left side of the head ?

Hi Globetrotter,

It will not crank or it will not start ?
It shows "P" on the dashboard. I guess it considers it as "in park".

Hi Pete,

It is indeed plugged at the front left side of the left head.
I tried another sensor (also second hand) and I have the same error message.

If I unplug the sensor and crank the engine, I have another error message. I do not recall that particular message though.

Back to a previous suggestion, is it possible to mount the flywheel inside-out ?
It does not rotate this way, does it ?

Hi Guys,

Tonight, I checked my timing. It was moved by about 1 teeth.

Re-adjusted, cranked, engine started ! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

We can close this post.

Still, I wonder why the belt has moved between installation and this check. I am 100% sure it was ok when I installed it... Maybe a ghost ?! Rolling Eyes

Hmmn, there was another thread recently about timing 'jumping' - I think either/both Flack and DM were involved.....
