New instrument cluster, does it need programming?

My instrument cluster has some faults. I came across a brand new cluster for little money and have bought it.
Can I just fit this to my d3, or will it need programming before it works?

Maybe I should just try it, but I'm affraid it will damage someting...

You will need to 'clone' the data from your old cluster into your new one...it can be done with a dealer tool or you can read the 'eeprom' on the old cluster and 'dump' the data into the new cluster

if I just plug it in it doesn't work at all?

if i would choose to clone the eeprom, do I have to solder it off or can I put a clip on it?

Hi

It has M30580 chip

Never tried with a clip but guess it's feasible.

Or simply desolder from old cluster and resolder onto new one Smile

Chip has immobiliser codes, kms and model data so best to simply swap chips Smile

it's been a very long time since I've done anything with eeproms.

if I wanted to clone the chip what kind of programmer would I need and which software?

You will need a chip reader and adapter socket for 8 pin dil

Or you can send me the chip from your 'old' cluster and I can read the data and program a new M35080 for you.

They cost around 50 euros for a working chip and not 5 euros as advertised on ebay!!!

PM me
