Hi all, just about to have a new battery fitted.
Keep seeing people saying that the system has to be reset to see the new battery.
So the question is , what does this procedure actually do to the car and what will happen if it's not done?
Obviously I'm going to get it done but just interested.

You do not need to do anything other than perhaps pre charge the battery if you have a charger? It helps the battery from new if a little dissapated, but not essential with a brand new battery.
You may have heard of a hard reset that puts everything back to factory specs?
Again not necessary for fitting a new battery.
I speak with recent experience of fitting a new alternator and new battery!

If you have battery monitoring then resetting it allows the car to relearn the state of the system. For example, if your parked, engine off and listening to music, the BMS monitors the charge. If it thinks the battery is low, it can turn off the entertainment system earlier to save the battery. If you fit a new battery, it won’t know it’s been changed and continues to turn the audio off early.
It’s just another reset, nothing more. Unless you change the capacity of the battery in which case you need to tell the intelligent charging system it has a different capacity to original. I’ve fitted the larger capacity Diesel battery to my petrol and reset both BMS and changed the capacity in CCF. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)
