About 30 quid and 1 hour to fix it the first time around. After doing it once, you could probably do it again in around 25 minutes.

It was covered under warranty, but would've been $360 otherwise...

Beyond a joke. Seems that this is sooooooooooo common it'd be a recall.

I have a large solid dog box in the boot which takes up all the room from floor to ceiling. If my actuator fails, is the only way to access it from the inside? If it does, I therefore assume I'd have to fold the 2nd row seats flat and pull the dog box forward and then smash the read window to access the lock and sort?!?! Shocked

Can't remember the exact details of how I fixed mine, but basically you need to remove the carpet panel on the lower tailgate to be able to access the actuator. Once that is off, you can fiddle with the mechanism so that you can release the upper tailgate.

IIRC, the hardest part is getting the carpet panel off without damaging the surrounding trim. The part is not fit for purpose, LR should have fixed it with a mod by now.

@johnc

Yep, if it goes the only way to release is from inside! Mine went 2nd week into December after going to garden centre to pick up xmas tree. Yes you guessed it,got the tree in in the car no problem, got home, tailgate wouldn't release.
With a bit of juggling managed to get the 6ft tree out thru rear doors,then following week into stealers who tried to charge me a fortune see this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post732011.html#732011

Afterwards realised the mess they made of the carpet on lower tailgate, removing this to get access to the broken cable,i,ll never go back there, but hey didn't have time to attempt it myself Big Cry

happened mine over the christmas, but can get tail gate open on the emergency procedure with some one holding the button on the number plate lights. button for bottom half of tail gate works fine once top half is open, so think water ingress has fecked the switch for top half!

Had that as well! Remove the soft rubber switch cover (the bit you use to open the top tailgate) and give the metal switch plate a clean and a spray of WD40. I think that you can remove the switch from the housing to do this.

Easy job, mine was corroded/dirty and sticking. Local dealer advised that you have to replace the whole tailgate switch/number plate light assembly. No thanks!

Will look at doing this when I get a bit of time as I guess prevention sounds a bit easier than cure!!

I was really surprised by the amount of crap I found inside the switch assembly. Mrs 767 must do a lot of reversing!!

Oh for crying out load! Mine has gone now. I guess exactly the same symptoms. I can press the upper tailgate release and it makes an electric servo-type noise but no clunk or release. Tried the emergency release but that just does the same thing. I had a quick pull at the carpet from the inside but didn't want to pull too hard in case I did some damage to the trim and found that this was no help anyway. But I guess from your post that this is what I need to do to release it. Plan on doing the job myself. Anyone know what parts I'll need to get?

Most likely the actuator cable. It has an "L" shaped metal attachment at one end, much like you used to get on bicycle brake cables. It has probably failed there, mine snapped in half. The bit is fairly cheap and is easy to replace once you have removed the carpet panel. Expect some scraped fingers and money in the swear box though.

This link should help.
