seriously, the route I would take would be some variant of this:
London
Calais
Spain
Morocco (part desert)
Algeria (semi desert)
Mali (semi desert)
Niger
Nigeria
Cameroon
Gabon
Congo (cutting across the west bit near Kinshasa, only few hours journey)
Angola
Namibia (famous Namibian desert)
South Africa (Capte Town)
